The NHL isn’t the place for players to develop their games into something it isn’t. You are what you are when you make the big show. Babs used to say it all the time. He doesn’t have time to teach everyone how to play, he can only use what they offer and coach them.

I also think Babs wasn’t too well liked by Dubas, and even tho he’s younger he’s the boss and likely wanted the coach he brought into the MLSE

I still wonder if LL was kept on as GM if Babcock would have been kept.

I agree, I think he has more upside then all the players you listed. Health is the biggest concern for him.

I really liked his play. He plays a different game than Bunting. Kase seemed to be about finding open space, making quick shots and passes. Bunting seemed to be more intent on creating chaos and then getting to the net. IMO, they had the best auditions for top six spots so far.

I kinda liked Kampf in a Freddie Gauthier who hits sort of way.

Yeah so it's weird that he said players can't develop but at the same time talked constantly about Matthews development into a 200 foot player, Kadri's development, etc.

If I had to summarize those interactions, it would be that he definitely knows everything and no one else knows half as much. Much of his philosophy seems very dated, akin to the inventor of Kerosene preaching about modern lighting.

Ironically it seemed to be his stubbornness and refusal to even consider adaptation in an evolving sport which was his downfall.

He's a relic who was bit square in the ass by modernization and no one cares to hear what he has to say about it anymore. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I just don't see how he validates the cap space spent on him no matter how hard I try.

If we want a guy to skate around really fast and do nothing offensively we have Engvall at 500k cheaper.

If Babs had been off the same start, I'm sure the axe would have fallen all the same.

Realistically, if LL had stayed the GM, they probably don't sign Tavares, they keep Marleau for the full 3 year term and don't lose a 1st. It's plausible they never trade Kadri, and maybe they are in on a solid FA Defenseman like a Pietrangelo. Who knows? It's a hell of a What If shell game to go back that far and speculate!

He is. There was a time when you could make that work. Scotty Bowman was, reportedly, the biggest wiener in hockey as a coach. He was absolutely manipulative. But I guess players didn’t have any recourse and he was able to push all their buttons. He was either a great coach or just had the greatest collection of players ever.
