The problem is long term, OEL isn't going to be that guy for very long, maybe 2-3 years at most and that's IF he manages to improve on his last two years. It's why I hesitate committing that much money to him whether on a bridge or long-term when I don't think he's "The Guy" that can play that role. I'd rather save the cap space, get as many picks/prospects and a top 4 D to replace him as we can and try and draft someone who can BE "The Guy" when OEL is inevitably useless like Edler was. - DariusKnight
I’m not going to guess on OEL. Any player mired in Arizona like he was would suffer. A fresh start & on a real team will help him. |

Oh shut up…they finished near the bottom of the league five of the past seven years. They need to built around the youth that losing got them. Both are great offensive players and the only success the teams had is with them, not without them. - LeftCoaster

Benning’s made so many contract blunders he’s now gun-shy…love to know where the numbers and years are at.
I’m guessing he’s well aware he’s running out of rope. - LeftCoaster

Your frustration with him is not a big deal to me. I was just curious about the spite and you explained. You are not demanding people agree with you or anything.
I have some reluctance about Hughes as well but I think he's a serious threat paired with the right guy. - boonerbuck
I subscribe to him being best suited on the 2nd pairing & PP1.
Let him rove & give him the partner to compliment him.

Benning has to stop drafting these upper tier players. That is the solution. Or perhaps trade more 1st rounders away because they keep screwing everything up in contract #2.
Sometimes you just can't win so middling players it is. - boonerbuck

It's not the upper tier players that's the issue, it's that he surrounds them with overpriced, overvalued and just plain disappointing middling players so that he can't sign the actual TALENT properly.
His drafting is decent, but his pro scouting is beyond poop... it's unbelievably total poop - DariusKnight
True but doesn’t apply to this years roster. |

Oilers are gonna be better this year. They still need a goaltender though. Mike Smith was good last year but he needs help. Nurse is one of the best defenseman in the league and Bouchard is sneaky good, he’ll surprise some this year. |

Rintoul might be a hell of a good guy but if I was ever driving around and had the radio on he was boring as hell.
Radio is going the way of the Dodo . Too expensive to the talent . Podcasts are the new thing I guess.

Oilers have arguably the 2 best forwards in the NHL and they can't win a playoff game. You're probably right, they might win 1 this time around. |

I am indifferent on Hughes, and Pettersson wanting big contracts, that said I can't forget the feeling I had when Hughes made that long bank stretch pass to Bo for the overtime winner in the bubble. There are a handful of defensemen who not only can make a play like that, but have the confidence to try. That is what he was missing last year, confidence. I feel like the whole team played without the swagger that they played with in defeating the defending Cup champs. We are all speculating what is going to be paid to each but let's not forget they are amazing talents. Pettersson in the Colorado game, gave us glimpses and we all could see a future. I think we are all passionate fans of differring degrees and most of all have been starved for a winner since 2011 really. I hope they sign and feel like they will, I expected all the speculation to go crazy this week as really after Monday there wasn't much happening this week. - Nucknab23
Hughes garnered much more attention & pressure last year. He didn’t handle it well enough but still put up the points. How he adjusts will be the question. That imo is what holds up his next deal. |

the supporting cast is probably worse than last season. Larsson was one of the better defensive defensemen last year and Keith was terrible. Sounds like a Tanev replaced by Schmidt move that really didn't work out well for the Canucks. |
