With the play of the some of the prospects it's getting harder to see where johnnson fits especially if vesey is signed and not sure he will be
Mercer looks ready and hasn't missed a beat and is making it hard to send him down
Holtz has shown that he can produce with that shot and has a couple of assists, does need work defensively
Thompson is a decent 4th line option and johnnson isn't suited for 4th line
Tatar Nico Bratt
Sharangovic Hughes holtz
Kouk zacha mercer
Wood McLeod Thompson
Wood could be on zachas line, if holtz goes to Utica shift wood up to 3rf line with kouk going back to Hughes
On another note, it's good to see the players you want to produce doing so and hopefully build on it into the season
And to stroke the fires.....with bernier getting the first 2 games maybe he will be 1a and a "reward" for being vaccinated

Agree on everything. I guess why not have the kids play? Might as well get the rookie season over with sooner than later. Just game 2 but they do look good. Johnsson needs to show more. I don’t care if he’s “not suited” for the 4th line.. if the top 3 are better without him then he can play a grinding roll next to McLeod and Thompson.
Vesey may even be better than Johnsson. I wouldn’t mind Vesey in the lineup. It’s going to be a tough call on Mercer and Holtz. Do they learn at this level or minors? I don’t think the minors would hurt them, especially Holtz. Vesey could perhaps play wing over one of those kids. He hasn’t looked bad. Glad I’m not the coach. |

I am ecstatic about how well the prospects have played. But I am also cautious. There’s a challenge in evaluating youngsters, even if they make a positive first impression because often those positive first impressions are against other young players. History is littered with examples of prospects who look good early and then suddenly find themselves in over their heads when the real NHLers showed up and started playing for keeps. I don't have the answer, but all this talk of inserting Mercer and Holtz directly into the NHL is premature. I hope Fitz looks at the longterm vision here before making any decisions. This goal should be proper development, but if they are ready so be it I just won't be disappointed if they are sent down. |

I think Hamilton doesn't have the most pressure but will feel extra pressure coming in as a major signing and people expecting alot from him and being a number 1, he will definitely help but wonder if our system is going to hinder him some
Johnnson does need to improve and show he wasn't just a flash on the pan - dmarsden2988
Certainly not fair to put the pressure on Hamiltons shoulders. He has done nothing but put up great numbers his entire career. He is just fine. All rookies needn't feel the pressure this season either.
P.K. has been terrible, and while many think he may bounce back this season, I have little faith in that. He is absolutely under pressure and on a contract year, and most likely playing 3RD behind Dougie and Sevo.
Nico needs to stay healthy and earn his 7M paycheck. By todays standards, that contact requires numbers hovering around 1ppg, or selke calibre defending. Coming off a season with freak injuries, he needs to bring more than 11 points this campaign if we have any chance of landing in the playoffs.
Blackwood and his anti-vacc stance puts pressure on him to perform remarkably well if that means not travelling to Canada.
Zacha needs to find balance to his game desperately. His decent offensive numbers were nice, but far from top line numbers, while his defensive game took an absolute nosedive. 8 blocked shots all season, and the single worst PK line in the NHL is not acceptable.
Johnsson is a tough assessment. He had an admirable -1 on this squad and his shooting % was uncharacteristically low. He was getting some chances but couldn't by a goal. He will 100% have better numbers this season, but ultimately is a bottom 6 guy.
Not trying to be all doom and gloom. Love the prospects, love the offseason additions, and feeling like we are prepared to take some serious steps forward this season. Those are just my critical opinions from last season.

Dressing a pretty watered down roster today, with Blackwood in net. According to Masisak there could only be as few as 4 other players on the opening night roster playing this afternoon |

I think Mercer's made the team already. Lindy was asked yesterday if there was anything else he'd like to see from Dawson and he just cracked a joke about the open net he missed. Dougie has been taking him under his wing. He has excelled in every situation thrown at him since he's been drafted. There's a chance he hits a wall and needs to get sent down during the season, but he's shown so far to be an NHL level player. Holtz I am not convinced is as ready as Mercer, and definitely see the an argument for starting him in the AHL.

Not going to get into vax vs antivax in here because the thread will just get messy
I am surprised too after he was hit pretty hard with covid and took a long time to get over and science says antibodies typically last 6 months which I believe has passed.
He has a right not to get vaxxed but getting vaxxed is the smarter decision and that is based on science and real information rather than legality of things, just makes everything more complicated for him when it comes to away games let alone not being able to play in Canada - dmarsden2988
You didn’t want to get into it, but you just did.
Antibodies last a lot longer than 6 months.
More and more people are getting Covid that had the vaccine (see Israel).
A person who gets Covid has a better chance of surviving than getting the experimental jab.
Do a little research. It is all there. |
