Ya me too. There was lots of talk about him being claimed by Seattle during the expansion draft. - carsonagenic
For the record it was Elliot that said that. I just copied and pasted.

I think you're right with the above. I think they want to make sure Rathbone is truly ready which is why he is seeing so many exhibition games.
Defensively, I think both hunt and burroughs have been better than juolevi and Rathbone. Rathbone is just such a good skater and brings that offensive element that none of the other defenseman bring. - Codes1087
agreed.
and with rathbone in abby for a chunk of games, he'll get some quality minutes and you can see if his defense is up to par game in and game out.
i agree with your assessment about hunt being better defensively. that's why it's on the coaching staff to manage the rookies' ice time and also pick favourable stylistic matchups when deciding which games to roster the rookies. |

I think the most ideal option would be send Rathbone down to get some top minutes in the AHL since he doesn't need waivers, and trade OJ in a package for a RHD. OJ has just fallen down the depth chart, and once Rathbone is ready OJ will be useless. Get some value out of him while you can - NewYorkNuck
that thought has also crossed my mind. i just think that you need to build him up and then dump him as his value right now would be minimal.
showcase him a few games and then trade him to a team that needs d. that list is usually pretty big. use that return and add more if needed to get the RHD.
obviously, doing 2 deals is difficult and i'm not suggesting it would be quick/instantaneous but i don't think there's a need to make a panic move either. see if you can build up some value for OJ and work from there. |

I'm torn on where he should play.
I would like to see Rathbone stick with the big club and help be that threat on PP2.
However, the thought of him logging big minutes in Abby to hone his skills and round out his game is probably the smarter choice.
As for Hunt, never liked him for whatever reason. Maybe its because he is an Oiler castoff. If you can't make that D.... (says alot about our D... ) |

I agree.
Still think it is too soon to move him as his value is virtually nothing. Especially at waiver time. Try to build him up, as you say, into an asset to keep or play. And try to forget where his draft position was, that doesn't help anybody now. |

I just think the RHD to start the season is dog food. If they can use OJ and a pick to pry someone half decent, that'd make a huge difference. |

If OJ could pass waivers I’d like him tried on the right side. Maybe his turns are better there & helps our right side depth if he transitions well. Trading LHD for RHD I don’t see as a reality for anything of significant value. |

and i definitely would like to see rathbone stick around and get some real minutes. that's what "i'd like," not what i think is best for his development. but let's be honest, with his ability to go up and down without waivers, he'll get his opportunities. |

From what I heard(and havent checked), Rathbone is a larger cap hit. There's also that to consider.

it ain't pretty. but i think they can make due at the beginning of the season. it's the lack of quality and depth that will get exposed as the season goes on.
(or i'm being blindly optimistic.) |

Pinning my hopes team D improves & special teams. Those 2 will greatly help out the win column. |

exactly. you either end up trading for the same type of player (disappointment) or you have to add significantly where OJ just looks like a throw in anyway. |

Vantel and I discussed this as well. We both thought, roll with it for 20ish games and see where we are at. In this division, they should...be able to hold our own with the firepower up front and be within striking distance of the 3 hole. Then address the D, if you can at that point when you know better what you have and possible injury status. Plus cap dollars will be more valuable at that point. |

At this point I'm fine with that. I don't think he's going to increase his value so much that people will be calling on him, or he's going to be looked at like a main piece to someone. |

Play the top 4 mostly major minutes & stay outta the box. Don’t wanna see conservative F style just smart play & skate/work hard every shift. 3rd pairing D minced in & more TOI on merit & if a decent lead is built. OEL & Poolman could be the cogs to allow all of this. |

If he starts with the Canucks his cap hit is salary only and any bonuses he hits are/can be carried over. If he starts in the AHL and gets called up, his cap hit is the full ticket including bonuses, which is another few hundred k |
