I don't know the cap implications and how the Isles need to reach them personnel wise but I think it would be a big mistake to waive Bellows. He had some great scoring chances against the Devils and I didn't notice any defensive mistakes. I'm not sure where he fits in the lineup but I feel he is potentially more valuable to the team than what he would bring in a trade. I would keep him around as a LW injury replacement or to give Parise a break now and then. |

I think Aho deserves a chance in the 7D spot. Whenever he's drawn into the lineup, he's never looked bad to me at all, and if he doesn't get a chance to show what he's got now...then when?
That said...Gustafsson is showing off some skills that the team can desperately use, especially on the power play. I don't know, maybe with two regulars well past their "best if used by" date, they'll go with 8 D so they can keep Greene and Chara rested throughout the season. But then that crunches things even more at forward... |

I don't totally disagree about Aho and kinda don't like that he's been stuck in limbo over the last few years and has barely played any games (AHL or NHL).
But at this point, if they like Gustafsson's game, the safe money is on them signing him. That could signal the end for Aho, since he requires waivers and it'd be tough to use a roster spot to carry him all year as an 8th d-man. There's definitely a real chance they'd lose him on waivers. Staple's article today said Lou was likely to send everyone down that requires waivers all on the same day in the hope that he'd kind of overload it and not everyone would be taken. It'd stink to lose him for nothing.
I also have some pretty big reservations about Gustafsson. He can move the puck for sure, but he's a putrid defender. Ideally he'd never draw into the lineup because things are working so well without him, but I have some concerns if he does.
Speaking of waivers, Friedman did mention this in his 32 Thoughts that he just released:
14. Over the past couple of seasons, the Islanders avoided putting Ross Johnston on waivers. They know there’d be interest. It’s hard to say how their salary-cap picture will look until all contracts are revealed, but other clubs are keeping an eye out. |

My 2 cents on who will be waived to get under cap until they are allowed to put Boychuk on LTIR day 1.
They will be $6 mill over so will have to waive about 6 guys to free up that money. My guess is it will be Panik, Leo, Ross, Hickey, Schneider, MDC, and a few other AHL guys like Czarnik, Timashov, Bardreau...etc.
bottom line is I don't think they will waive guys that might get picked up like Bellows. |

Ironic that u were posting this as I was typing my nonsense. I guess you can scratch Ross from my thoughts but I am pretty sure they waived Ross last year when they had to be cap compliant.

Has that been the case since joining the Islanders?
Unfortunately I haven’t been able to watch any of the preseason tilts.

No, I think he's been OK defensively in the preseason. I haven't seen every single game, but he hasn't looked like a liability. But a couple of their games have been against the Devils/Flyers B/C squads so it doesn't do a whole lot for my confidence.
His offensive skill is undeniable though, so maybe it all works out. I wouldn't hate the move, just have some concerns about it. |

Fair enough.
Guess we’ll see how things go when he faces actual NHL rosters. |

I just think AHO is too small in mho. Hickey 2.0 who also was on the outside looking in when Trotz took over. Just my opinion of course. |
