I mean, I don't like snakes...but I wouldn't run in the other direction if I saw one.

Unless it's one of those "kills you instantly" ones, in which case I'd outrun Usain Bolt and probably leave a mile-long trail of diarrhea behind me

I liked him for awhile and thought there might be something there, but I'm not much of a fan anymore

I had to say it because we both know someone was inevitably saying it to me

Yeah, my hope is waning. Something's missing, but I still think the tools are there.

Barry and Lou love their tough guys so I'm going to be surprised if they try to put Johnston on waivers. I would rather trade him out west for anything then to lose him for nothing and watch him land in the Metro or Eastern Conference. I could see the Devils putting in a claim if he becomes available. Plus I think the games vs the Rangers are going to be a blood bath the first few times they play
- Isles

I agree with the bold. And because, as you subsequently say, the games vs. the Rangers are going to be nasty, they will keep Ross for those games, if nothing else. Martin really isn't tough enough to take on Reaves, and I don't think they want to take a chance on 44 year-old Chara getting injured in a fight.

I viewed him as our primary depth at C, but it seems like they slide the versatile () Uncle Leo into wherever they need him, including C.

I actually don't think Hickey would be the worst 7th D either for a lot of teams around the league

But I get the comparison. The difference, imo, is Aho probably has a bit more offensive upside. So if you're going to be undersized and average at most aspects of the game, it helps if you have that one skill or ability that stands out a bit. I don't think Hickey has that. Aho might...hard to say since we haven't seen much of him.

I agree with Chief though...it'll probably be Gustafsson, and really he's had a good enough camp to justify it: As-advertised offensively and he hasn't been a disaster defensively.

Salo has looked better than aho however he does t need waivers

This is from the Staple article I mentioned the other day.

but Uncle Leo could very easily be on the season-opening roster. The Islanders will try to maximize their long-term injured reserve space afforded by Johnny Boychuk’s cap hit of $6 million, and the best way to do that may be to have Komarov ($3 million cap hit) and/or Thomas Hickey ($2.5 million cap hit) on the 23-man roster when teams need to become cap compliant the week after next.

I am not 100% sure Arthur truly understands the cap rules (Or maybe I am not understanding his article). He wrote a few things last year that didn't make sense. The Isles are over the cap right now by $5mill and that is without Chara's number being on the books (capfriendly). You can bury only $1 mill of a guy's cap number in AHL. They have to be cap compliant before they put Boychuk on LTIR.. which is why all these teams are starting to waive a ton of guys. then once the Season officially starts they cap put Boychuk or whoever on LTIR and activate those guys.

he is probably right about Leo though if Martin isn't ready Leo will be on the roster for sure.. IMO.

The long-shot I'm interested in keeping an eye on is Vande-Sompel. He missed all of the last two seasons after suffering that bad injury training camp two years ago. I think he's got some skill. Maybe the lost development time kills him in the end, but he's worth keeping and eye on.

Remember you can be 10% over the cap prior to day 1 of the season.
This gives teams flexibility before the LTIR kicks in on Day 1 of the season.

Staple makes it seem they have to be 6 million over so they can put JB on LTIR and use the full 6 million. If they are only lets say 4 million over they only get 4 million of JB's 6 million leaving them with a waste of 2 million in extra cap space. If that's the case then that's why you would want Hickey & Leo on the roster because they make more then some of the cheaper options they are battling with. That kind of makes sense if that is indeed true. At this point I have no idea

Has to be otherwise the Isles would have to shed 6 million in salary by next week to be cap compliant which isn't happening.

Correct as 10% of the cap is actually a higher cap relief than Boychucks LTIR relief.
