My guess is that Gus’s $800K is being used to get the Hawks as close to $81.5 mil. On day 1 so they get the full use of Shaw’s LTIR on day 2
- LAHawk

I agree. Cap friendly says the Hawks have a 27 man roster plus Shaw at a cap hit of just under 87M.

They can reduce the roster to 21 (including Shaw) by removing the salaries of Subban, Delia, Regula, Entwistle, Kurashev, C. Jones (LTIR) and Kalynuk (LTIR). (Powers wrote that the Kalynuk move to LTIR will add 450K to the cap instead of deducting the full 925K. Beats me.)

After all these moves the cap hit will be 82.225M. Bring the roster down to 20 by waiving Gus and his 800K to bring them down to 81.425M or keep him on the roster and demote Mitchell bringing the cap down to 81.300M. 81.425M is closer to the 81.5M cap limit giving them fuller advantage of Shaw's LTIR on day 2. Call up Entwistle and Kurashev, maybe Galvas on day 2 to have a 22 man roster and still have about 1M in cap space.

Gus takes one for the team by spending time in Rockford making 800K. If Hawks are desperate they can call him up after 10 days.

Blackhawks officially sign Erik Gustafsson to a 1-year, $800k contract.

My bet is when Kalnyuk and Jones comes back, Gus gets waived, in the meantime, he is there for salary cap purposes.

Signing Gus doesn’t make much sense but it doesn’t hurt much either. The most likely scenarios for the full season would be Gus at the #7 d-man with the Hawks or in Rockford once Jones and Kalynuk are healthy (or better yet claimed on waivers).

It’s true that the PK needs more work that the PP, but Gus could help on PP2 if other options don’t work out. Again, uncle Jones and Kalynuk return.

LTIR and the cap hit is a complicated subject. I think it works this way.

To take advantage of Shaw going on LTIR, at the start of the season, the object is to get as close to the 81.5M cap limit (including Shaw's 3.9M) with a minimum of 20 players including Shaw.

If the moves I explained earlier occur the Hawk, will be at 81.425M, 75,000 less than the cap limit. Once Shaw is placed on LTIR on day 2 of the season, the Hawks will have his salary of 3.9M less the 75K = 3.825M as their upper limit over the 81.5M. That's about 85.3M they can spend to ice a team.

Will Subban or Delia be claimed? I could see Subban but doubt Delia.

Yes! I'm not the only one! Truth be told, they caught a break when Penn State's QB went down, but great win.

Any specific reason why Regula would still be on the roster?

Alec Regula has not practiced since Sept. 27 due to a lower back injury.

He's out on the ice doing 1-on-1 work right now, though, before Blackhawks practice at 11:00.

Doesn't Boston still need a Goalie? Is Rask playing this season? Maybe they will pick up Malcolm again?

I tend to give the Hawks player personnel department the benefit of the doubt on drafting, FA, trades, etc. figurinng they have more info and experience than I do.

Sorry, this morning, they're morons!

Gus makes zero sense. If you only wanted a minimum D man to sit in the press box, you could of signed a D man, who you know, could play D.

The only scenario I could come up with that made any sense is that they are hiring him to eventually be a coach, and he's going to start that process now.

You know, all going pretty decent, last preseason game successful, Captain looks to be back and in good condition health wise, letting the young guys go down and develop, things looking up, and they have to go and sign Gus.

Sometimes I think these GMs just can't help themselves and shoot themselves in the foot, gotta give the fan base something to be pissed about............

No mention, but I would guess wing.

Edit: He's switching in and out with Kurashev.

I doubt they trade Strome. He's gonna rotate in and out depending on injuries and positive covid tests all season long. Teams need roughly 30 players to make it through a season.

The Blackhawk sales department is putting on the full court press. I'm getting 2-3 emails a week trying to sell ticket packages, and the 'pre-game locker room experience'.

Today's missive was again offering 5 game packages, plus a new 3 game package, plus single game tix, in case a package isn't 'right for me'. 3 game packages start at $173, single game from $22**, which I assume is standing room.

Wouldn't the $800,000 spent on Gus be better put to use hiring an extra scout or two?
