100% agree. Being a team captain isn't just about playing hard on the ice - you're also the face of the franchise in public and the media. Whether they like it or not, Chabot has been the face of the rebuild from Day 1, starting with the fact that his play facilitated the Karlsson trade. He also very quietly signed on long-term exactly as the team wanted, is (for my money, at least) the best player on the team, is a well-spoken guy, and can seamlessly engage the francophone element of the fanbase. Factor in Tkachuk's long-term reluctance and highly unpopular contract hold-out, and I don't really know how much more evidence you need to make the call.

Pretty sure I am in the minority, but there is a perceived rivalry for who gets the C, Brady or Chabot.

Since this team is still a couple of season away, why not wait a year or two to see if another player steps up to fill the role. Maybe Stu or Batherson become legitimate options. Maybe a player is acquired that can blends well with the captaincy. To me both Chabot and Tkachuk are 'meh' options.

Love how Norris answered the Tkachuk question:
He’ll just have to sit at home and watch it … to be honest it’s in the rear view mirror and we gotta take care of ourselves

He doesnt control who has the C, nor should anything related to the captaincy have to do with contract. Like others have said in the media, did Alfie have a long term deal with he was captain? If Brady is worthy to be the captain, then he should be the captain, no team in the NHL bases it on whether they have their captain locked up to an 8 year contract!

I absolutely think Brady is worthy of being Captain. But so are other players.... who didn't hold out.

It's obviously up to the coaching staff. but to me, why give someone the "C" who clearly doesn't have faith in this team enough to stay long term

I agree with you, sort of, I actually think Colin White is a quality leader as well.
But this team hasn't has a Captain for a while now.

I think it's sort of time, especially since the rebuild is basically done. We need a "C" to know who will be leading this team hopefully to a cup or two.

My only concern with Brady at this point is holding out isn't just about money. It shows a clear feeling that not wanting long term, means he has no faith in the team long term.

This is the attitude all players should have. Brady will certainly be gone within 4 years, so its best for the team and players to move on.

Unfortunately, Dorion does not share this view. I suspect Dorion will give Brady the deal he wants. Dorion has long known this impasse was unavoidable, and if the intent were to trade Brady, it would have been done in the off-season when potential suitors had available cap space. The Tkachuk's know this.

I anticipate a short term deal will be singed shortly, with a no-trade clause in place for the last year of the contract. This deal will handcuff the Sen's next GM, as Brady will hold all of the cards in his final season.

Sorry. I know you try. Nobody wants to be rude. But sometimes you are dumber than a garden hose.

A team cannot sign an RFA to a deal that includes a no trade clause for any year that the player could have been an RFA under the CBA. So, for Tkachuk to ask for a no trade provision in the contract the deal would have to be for at least 5 years and the only year that the "no trade" clause would be effective is in year 5.

So, if Brady signs a 5 yer deal he can have a no trade clause for year 5 only. The Sens would be free to trade him at any time up to the end of the first 4 years of the deal.

He wouldn't go to st. Louis simply because he prefers it....the Blues would also probably pay the most for BT and have some assets that might work for the Sens.
- GrimmdaGoalie

what do the Blues have that the Sens would want?

Kyrou is solid, but he'd slot in behind Norris and probably Pinto eventually. Thomas is a 3rd liner AT BEST on this team. Dunn would fall into the void that Brannstrom is in.......and everyone else is either too old or poop.....and it's not like they have any prospects that would be of interest, they have arguably the worst farm system in the entire league.

Whether he wants to go there or not is irrelevant......the blues don't have the cap space to sign him (and ottawa isn't taking a garbage cap hit back) and they don't have the requried assets to get him......it's probably one of the least likely teams to acquire him.

If this team were a legitimate playoff/cup contender, I’d probably feel a little different about the urgency of these negotiations.

However this team still has plenty of ?

-Center depth
- Reliable bottom 6
-Not sure what the d is yet
-Goaltending

In order to address any of these, there has to be enough cap flexibility down the road.

So far, PD has done a good job handing out the deals: Chabot, Drake, Murray (2x Stanley cup winner..it is what it is) White (at the time we all thought it was fair and had upside..obviously hasn’t lived up to it)

After Brady, this team still has Norris, TS and whoever else breaks in. We can’t have Brady start a domino effect with the guys after him.

Short term him. I’ve said it before, let’s see if he could help this team to the playoffs..THEN we could talk about his worth and value.

come on man, you can't say that PD does a good job with contracts, and in the same sentence use Murray and White as examples....those are EASILY the 2 worst contracts on the team right now.

I agree with the Chabot and Bath deals being good......but PD has failed much more in contract negotiation than he has succeeded at this point.
