Hawks played better the last two periods on the road. I still say Dach played a good game, hustling, back checking, just couldn’t bury one. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Strome in next game. - Angotti
Give him credit. He owned it. Admitted he needs to score those and it’s a different game and it’s been a problem last few years he needs to figure it out.
So there’s that. Onward. |

He's definitely a character guy. He is so young. Lot of pressure at that age.

Yep lost it in the 1st period I really think they played ok after the 1st Hagel is just a machine .Kane looks hurt. 13 Borgstrom did not impress but they all need time to get going . GO HAWKS !!!!!! |

It just comes down to a team that has very little defensive structure. The 4 players on the pk played better defense then the 5 man unit.
We don't protect center ice, we barely cover the back side player, our dmen go to the half boards when there's no help. I wish i could say I'm shocked we gave up 4 goals, should of been 6 or 7 but that's what a top 10 goalie does for you. Covers up a, i want to say terrible defensive system, but I've been waiting several years now and still i don't see one.

My uneducated guess is upper body injury. Left side. Appears to be going through the motions. Bad news if true. (Now that I've said so, he'll score a hat trick in Jersey). Hope I'm way off base here.

The final score was not indicative of the play. Could easily have been 7 or 8, to 2. Rough opener. They'll be much more competitive in New Jersey. |

Going forward I would expect a lot of agreement on this board about the defensive structure. I have been wailing since last season about the break out. The issues about defense are deeper, more than just that particular gripe. Obviousky the team.is better on paper this year. So it us going to be an embarrassment and a bad mark on Colliton's report card if he cannot get much improvement team wide.
There has been mention how Colliton may even loose his job if the team is not up to par. Would .500 and sniffing the playoffs be the hope that Rocky/St Bowman/Colliton have planted in their mind as entirely possible
I do believe Colliton will demote players whom he feels are not contributing a solid enough effort defensively.. Maybe only Kane can escape weak effort defensively |

Or Dach scores, Kane doesn’t miss the net three times and the hawks get it closer or win. After the first the Hawks made a game of it. Take away that awful first ten minutes and the Hawks had a half decent game.

CHI has Khaira, MacEnt and Carpenter on the ice in the 1st and the ice it.
COL 2 assistant coaches immediately throw out their top line with Rantanen and and Landeskog
Hawks get a quick whistle.
All the players on the ice look to the bench for a change
All 3 announcers call for the change/bad matchup
Colliton does nothing
So he either WANTS Khaira, MacEnt and Carpenter- 3 guys who are 13th forwards making less than 1mil and a rookie making his first opening night start - vs one of the best lines in the world - and Colliton believes that is his teams best opportunity
Or he was asleep behind the bench and has zero clue.
To WANT that matchup is pathetic. Inexcusable.
It was shortly after that, the timeout happened. Toews took over the bench.
He does not put the team in the best position to win. Has not learned that in any of his time here. He cannot manage the bench.
This team.has better talent to look that pathetic early in the game. |

Yeah...well it was still half bad Pallie! Also think we've got enough tape on Dach now to see he's a bust and was nothing more than a product of the FO HYPE machine. |

The PK was 4 for 4. That is something both unexpected and long-term very good if they can keep it up.
Matchups were indeed the killer.
No reason to panic after one game. |

Murphy and DeHaan were the 2 most out of position Dmen on the Hawks
And the are in year 3 of his "system'
There is no system. You don't look like that if there is one.
There has not been any improvement in bench management in 3yrs.
And his roster choices are brutal. Mitchell has been overwhelmed since he stepped on NHL ice. Zero reason for him to get that many chances over 1st rounder Beaudin (who played for CAN in the Worlds in the off season)
But his hand picked Gus is going to get plugged in soon.
He is awful |

Agreed, bad first game for him, but doubt he gets benched. He needs to be on third or fourth line. I didn’t like this acquisition, I would have rather kept the Seabrook contract. Three years at $5M, ouch! Would much rather have Saad at $4.5M. |

A lot of the stats looked better in the 2nd and 3rd, but not much decent pressure on Kuemper:
http://www.naturalstattri...0005&view=limited#lbhm5v5
They really were never in the game - much of the improvement seemed “score adjusted”. Everything was above the circles.
Better PK, and the PP actually looked good. Dach with a good game, Hagel had some jump, top-4 defensemen weren’t good, Kane’s play is concerning to me.
Oh, well - look for a better on-ice product against NJD and Pens coming up. |

Not me, I'm not making excuses. I never thought of Jones as a #1 and worth all that money. And his brother was a stupid idea too. But he wasn't right last night. A lot of it had to do with the speed of colorado which can make a guy look foolish. But it did also look like maybe his skates weren't right as well. He didn't get better all night. Perhaps I'm used to seeing Jones play against the hawks where he had better partners. That goes for Johnson as well. |

4x Cup winning coach Q was forced multiple times to fire his assistant coaches by the FO
Yet, Colliton gets to keep Alpo's love child and neutered elf on a shelf Crawford as his main assistants - cannot teach him about matchups in 3yrs?
How many Dmen has Brookbank ruined vs developed between Joki, Boqvist, Mitchell, Beaudin.....and how many more does he get before they realize he's a problem too?
The single worse coaching staff in the NHL. They can go 9-1 in their first 10....and it will be because of their talent and in spite of this staff.
Unprepared. Unqualified. Overwhelmed. Failures. |

Wow,you just said all that needs to be said. The NHL is an unforgiving league and weaknesses get recognized and exposed quickly on the ice and behind the bench.
And this squad has an 'Assistant Coach' who has been a Head Coach with 3 different NHL teams - if he has no input, influence or grasp of the obvious then its going to be a very long season.
