FWIW... Sounds like the Pens want Marino to play a more stay at home style. Play within himself. After Rutherford over sold his capabilities last year, he was trying to do way too much. If he's paired with Matheson, he'll need to be more conservative.

IDK how I feel about that exactly. I kinda feel like Marino is in the same mold as Matt Niskanen. I don’t think a stay at home style of play will become him very much even if he’s not a pop off the ice #1 defenseman. He needs to be allowed to be an all around mobile guy.

I'm not sure they want to totally stifle his offensive instincts. I just think they want him to pick his spots more carefully. I totally agree with it if he's paired with Matheson. Matheson makes 3 or 4 WTF decisions a game. Bad things will happen with that tandem if Marino isn't a little more responsible. I have no expectation that Matheson can fix all his mistakes.

Away from Matheson...sure, a little more freedom. I believe Marino was trying to do things above his ability's last season.
