At the time Nylander was an overpay, that was years ago its OK now, but the term is what I think makes it bad for most of his contracts.
Matthews AAV is fine, but not for a low term of 5 years that walks him to FA, Marners is a flat out overpay by about 1.5M especially with a 6 year term. - Archaic
At the time, Dubas thought the cap was going up each of the next years...
Fans are so hard on Dubas.. So, Suziki at 7.8 is a good deal and Marner, 3rd in the league in scoring, is a bad deal at 10.9.... OK |

Oh well. I really don't think Dubas gives a FRANK. Fans should use some level of common sense.
Or not, don't care. |

I think the bigger issue was only getting 5 years out of Matthews. Lock him up, dammit. Not straight to UFA. |

Some of the better talking heads were saying that the escrow catch-up is set to be paid during next season - that's why the Cap is projected to go up a bit during that season.
Most importantly it means that we'll be back to business as usual and it was suggested we'll be into the low 90's within a couple of years.
Just in time for AM and WN to hit the market. |

He has 1 goal in 1 game thus far. Pre-season doesn't count. - Aaron_85
Yes but he had push back when Anderson went all idiot, haven't seen toughness out off the guy till then. |

He bought 1 UFA year. But I agree something like McDavid's 8 x 12.5 would have meant more female doging around here but would have likely been better in hindsight. |

So plenty of Cap space to pay Auston to a max contract?

Really, If the cap goes up 2.5 to 3 mill each year, that goes away... |

4 years would have been straight to UFA.
The 5 year contract could turn out to be good for the Leafs...If they can get him to resign when this contract is up, they would be resigning a 26 turning 27 year old instead of a 29 turning 30 year old. The contract is almost guaranteed to be 8 years.
All depends on if they can get him to resign.

They need to save cap space, trade Marner and sign McDavid. |

Didn't see a lick of the game. Looking at the fancy stats ...seems to suggest:
1. Lines 1-3 were all at least "solid" and carried the play against MTL.
2. Line 4 sucked ass in spite of starting in the OZone all night.
3. Muzzin/Holl look like they either sucked or got covered in the suckiness of line 4.
4. The Kampf line started in the D zone all night but got the better of their matchup.
5. Campbell was a beast ..especially early.
Amadio and Simmonds - the clock is running. |

If McDavid even hints he wants to play in Toronto there is no way Mathews leaves. |

I didn't say he was leaving. I said "if they can resign him".

20% of 90M is 18M. Book it.
Seriously though, even at his current ~14% of Cap he'd be looking at about 13M per season. |

The NHL would never let them both play for the Leafs... |
