Eugene is tighter than a Nuns hoho on Sunday.... Reason for hold-up.
- bixll

Pretty sure the reason is as simple as

Dorion : We want you on the team long term as part of the face of this young franchise...nay...the face!

Tkachuk *glances at his dad, brother and agent uncle* : Pay me

Dorion : Uggg...we don't really...

Tkachuk : PAY ME

Dorion : Will you sign long term if we "pay you?"

Tkachuk : (frank) yes, gimme the money!

Done deal.

That means nothing to Matthews... The issue that YOU won't... He is in the hockey capital on the world... I don't get your take. But, fine. We will see in 4 years.
- bixll

2 years. He’ll get traded after next season because he’ll have the NTC in the last year of his contract and they won’t want to lose him for nothing.

All I ask is you don't say your opinions as facts, clearly others don't like this also.

I certainly wouldn’t want to play outside my home country on the other side of the continent.

Also he’ll be at the point where he’ll expect the full 20% of the cap and the leafs won’t want to do it but a team in the states will.

- Dozzer

I think you have a good argument that Matthews could go. But it’s a stretch to treat it as a certainty and an even bigger stretch to deny that another American signing a long term deal to stay in Canada didn’t really have a choice and that there is therefore no relevance.

And yes, we are all stubborn.

The bolded is precisely what I’m saying. Holy poop do you read my posts?

Pay him more if you want the long term or make the contract shorter if you want to pay him less.

- Dozzer

Yes, I do. I agree with that part, but the team wants the player. That consideration has to weigh heavily as well. If the player has a personal valuation that's untenable, then it's on the team to let them see if they can find an offer sheet that pleases them. Then the team can decide if they like that price or not as well. The player does have leverage, especially if they are a key part of what the team is trying to build upon.

Willy had more points in his first two full seasons, and quite frankly plays less minutes, including PP time (couldnt find these numbers to prove that). Brady isnt close in skill level to Willy.
- Archaic

I’ll agree to disagree, different type of players but Willie assisting on a bunch of Matthews goals with ozone starts and him shooting 14-18%

If Willie gets that much after a couple 20 goal seasons playing in prime spots then Tkachuk is too, plus he crash and bangs and takes care of him and his teammates. JMO

I’ll do whatever I want when it comes to my posts.

Matthews won’t be here long term and I believe it. Tkachuk was willing to sit out until he got what he wanted in one way or another and it’s truth.

Brady does bring in a completely different aspect to the game.

Then again, we all know by now (I think) how good Nylander is in important moments.

Love that player.

We don't though, half the people here won't acknowledge that.

You wouldnt, but people in professional sports do, all the time.
Plus how do you know the leafs wont want to sign him to the full 20% or how do you know he will want the full 20%?
There were some hints in the ESPN article that Matthews doesnt like the "spotlight" too much, but any high profile city he goes to he will get that.
Im sure he'll go to which ever team offers the right amount of salary, term, endorsement possibilities, chance of winning and wherever he is most comfortable with. Right now Toronto meets all those and more, similar to a few other state side NHL teams. Arizona not being one of them at all.

I believe that Matthews will recruit McDavid to come to the Leafs once McDavids contract is up.
