I would argue that literally anyone in the league who gets paid his kind of money is paid to score on the PP.

Come on now, people wouldn't even give Drew Doughty a pass if he were to go an entire season without a powerplay goal.

- joel878

It's such an outlier to his overall performance that it looks like a meaningless fluke to me. He got 23 points on the PP. You're literally ignoring the fact that he's one of the best Leafs in a generation by cherry picking one quirky stat.

I know it's early, but I feel like bunting brings a bit more then hyman did offensively, and crashes the net more

When he's been a point-per-game player since he entered the league and is a first team all-star entering his prime, he gets quite a bit of rope. Those aren't weird things, they are extremely obvious validations of his performance.
- Zezel

Is it fair that I don't care what he did 2-3 years ago.

I'm positive I can give you examples of players signing mega contracts and not living up to them until the end of time, no one validates them by what the player did as a rookie.

If one is going to boast about him finishing 4th in scoring, it's about the entire picture. You can't have that discussion without it being included that he factually completely disappeared when it counted. Saying 'so did x player' doesn't change that. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Okay. So it's acceptable that I consider it a fluke he finished 4th in scoring?

I mean... He never did that before. That's in line with your logic, right?

It's a pointless discussion. The good news for you is when you're wrong this year, you'll be happy about it.

How much rope does a guy get for his money before its acceptable to question his performance?

Open question, for you and Zezel both.

Because anytime anyone does question his performance it's validated by some weird thing in the past or disqualified because of reasons that are convenient for Marner only. Let's set the parameters so we know when it's valid.

- joel878

I've stated many times on here, I believe he is overpaid by a million, I wasnt happy at all with his contract.
I've stated many times on here, he didnt play great these past playoffs, both him and matthews were shut down by Montreal's shut down line.....who also shut down two other teams top lines in the following rounds.
I've also stated he needs show he can wear big boy pants in the playoffs and not talk about wanting to do it aftewards.
Im no marner fan boy, but Im no hater as well. He's really not paid to score more than 20 - 25 goals a year, he's a set up guy. A 90plus point set up guy.
Its 3.5 games in, Im not too worried.
If he finishes the year with less than 89 - 90 plus pts....then maybe I'll be concerned.
But for me this year, its all about the playoffs, dont care what matthews or marner do in the reg season, it doesnt matter to me.
They need a big playoffs.

Has Nylander always been better than Marner? My column.

He’s not as big or strong on the puck like human but he’s pesky. Leafs need a little poop disturber. They’re too nice. Hyman was too nice.

Not always, but currently, and also at some point in the past.

You know I get that hockey is a physical sport, and I get that teams want to hit the Leafs because they are not a physical team . . .but there is a time limit on how long after a guy has played the puck that you can hit him.

Like taking 5 steps and 2 seconds to hit a guy behind the net after he's dished it? Maybe it's not a hard hit, but the point remains - it's illegal.

Someone remind him that he hasn't scored on the PP in a lifetime and to stop trying to shoot. 🤣

But Drew got the money for his scoring and defensive play.
Up until last season, he averaged 22 goals a season.
Last year he was on pace for 29 which is an anomaly compared to the other season (1 other at 26)
But when he signed his deal it 19 - 22 goals a season.

As ive said though, I agree he's on a goal scorer cold streak for sure. But he isnt useless.
