With the exception of the top pair, under the same circumstances of last season, this defense as a whole would also struggle in my opinion. I'm disappointed in Sanheim so far this season but I question how soon York would be ready for a top 4 role. Flyers have made the mistake before of rushing players too soon. York should break in with limited minutes on the 3rd pair. - MJL
Not really they just misjudged myers and though he was good.
so who did they rush?

It feels like our D is better than last year, even with Ellis injured....i wonder why that is - bradster
Only explanation possible is Yandle. Risto has obviously made the D worse. Ellis not playing. Must be Yandle. Seeler? So confusing.

If we want to look at offensive point production and compare Ristolainen and Sanheim, then context is important. In terms of EV points, since Sanheim has been a regular in the lineup, he is the superior point producer. Ristolainen has the advantage on the PP but Sanheim doesn't see much PP time. |

Agreed, its funny people complain we have up a 1st for RR, but no one mentions we used a 1st on Sanheim. - bradster
1rst round picks are a large piece even in a weak draft, but legit top 4 RHD aren’t cheap. I’m not totally sold on Risto, but realize he hasn’t even played 10 games yet. I see things he does that are hard to find in d man. I see things he does that no other Flyer d man is capable of. I’m still very hopeful that this trade will work out. I guess we’ll see. |

before it happened i actually thought they would move sanhiem before myers...as the rhd position is always hard to find. I questioned Myers game last year and while he still has time to develop, he has been a healthy scratch for all but their first couple of games. Soon he too will be what he is.
but when it's all said and done. i take our d this year as opposed to last year. Yes the whole team struggled last year, but Myers was just terrible in his coverage last year.
Said before and others have as well. If york is what we think he is then sanhiem is def the one i move. - Peter Richards
Agreed, they are much more sound this year on the backend, and the biggest add has been out for most of the season so far. I was not a fan of the Myers/Sanheim unit all last year…it was awful. I too, am not sold on Sanheim but hope he can elevate his play this year. York or Zamula both could be knocking on the door shortly. |

man 1/2 way through the season and we are giving up on players.
All players make bad plays. While I don't think =/- is a great stat you can use it, so far so good. The Flyers are getting the saves and blocks, that could all change and we could see what happen last year or, as games go along everyone could be a little better. I can say all D have made bad plays. seems Provy has been real good and Braun also but they still made mistakes.
Lets hope all of them continue to improve. |

At his best, he brings a hard to find collection of abilities and has played well overall. First game or two were shaky.
Nearly scored on two different plays last game. Lots of blocked shots and hits in the Edmonton game.
Has played well overall. - bmeltzer
Agree with you. There might be holes in his game but some of the criticism is overly harsh and relentless. Risto is a big boy and very well paid and whatever he gets comes with the territory. He seems like a guy that lays it on the line every night and that makes him better than the know-it-all keyboard jockeys on this board who put up nothing but hot air.

Is comparing a pro hockey player to a poster in any way logical? How do you know what a poster does for a living? Maybe a poster is a policeman, firefighter, or other first responder. Or how about a health care worker who worked through the pandemic. Those are people who lay it on the line. Not a hockey player.

Some want to compare Sanheims offensive to Risto’s offensive game. The stats really don’t show a comparison at all.
Sanheim 263 career games ….88 points ….drafted 2014
Risto. 548 career games …245 points….drafted 2013
Not close at all. Risto was able to make an NHL blue line before turning 20. Sanheim took a little longer which does explained part of the large discrepancy but not on any relevant level.
One guy has the skill set to play the pp…..one guy has not been able to show that skill set on a regular basis and thus doesn’t sniff pp time. To breakdown EV/PP is a very, very lame argument when over all production is not even close. Risto produced which is why he was on the PP. Risto has simply been the better offensive player and had a better offensive career up till now. This is not my opinion….these are FACTS…..and facts matter. |
