I'm not bullpooping here - working from home was terrible for my mental health.

I've felt more energized this past week than I have for 20 months.

I get that the vast, vast majority of people don't want to come back to an office setting - at least not 5 days a week.

But for me, this is what I want to do.

Gives me days where I can take it slow in the morning, walk my son to school, etc.

And I can keep my motivation by going to the office as well.

I do love how flexibility is now a given.

You're both right.

While Mikheyev has been predominantly a right winger, he does shoot left. Last season, on the lines he played with for more than 50 minutes, he played over 111 minutes on the left side last year on lines with:

Mikheyev - Kerfoot - Simmonds
Mikheyev - Engvall - Simmonds

He played just over 300 minutes on the right side - and yes, when he played with Nylander last season, Nylander shifted to the left wing.


Under similar conditions in 2019, he played exclusively on the right side. He did play about 30 minutes total on the left side when Nylander was his right winger, centred by either Matthews, Tavares or Kerfoot (roughly 10 minutes of ice time for each, so presumably not exactly an experiment anyone was willing to keep aggressively playing with).

Mikheyev did play left wing exclusively in last year's playoffs against the Habs.

This conversation brings back sweet, happy memories of my first career job, when you didn't dare leave before 7 pm, even if you had absolutely nothing to do.

Such a waste of time and energy.

And so franking counter-productive - kick people out at 5 pm, so they can recharge their batteries.

I once worked at a place where from the May 24 weekend to Labour Day, the office closed at 1 pm on Fridays. Staff always got their poop done by 1 pm.

Management would usually linger until about 2 pm, but then we would go out and have a couple of beers and have a 50/50 chitty-chat - some work, some non-work. It was really productive.

I get where you're coming from - if your job involves other people, meetings, collaboration, design, engineering or you're a bit of an extrovert or enjoy having those moments, or if you like your coworkers, the office is a good place to be. It also sort of forces a little more focus because it is, afterall, a workplace.

I've mentioned before that my team used to be extremely tight knit (external parties together at our homes for XMas, Thanksgiving, Summer, Olympics . . . you know, whatever). Then I wanted to be at work because I was with friends. The company basically tore down in 2014 or 2015 and I was the only one left from a group of 10-15 or so that had been together since 1999.

The office is the last place I want to be and it's in Mississauga near the airport; I'm in Waterdown, so the drive sucks too.

That all said, my job is something I can do (and have been doing since 2015) over Zoom and on my own, and the flexibility I've had to help my kids get to and from school and other events in the last 6 years has been fantastic.

I had an older colleague in my first professional job who never left before 6-7PM.

People thought this guy was working extremely hard and cut him alot of slack for his (many) mistakes because of it.

The guy was basically online shopping for 2 hours after most people were done or talking on the phone with friends.

try being alone and the office lights on a 1 hour timer.
After 1 hour you need to get up and turn them back on.

I was a step ahead of that. There was a very smart guy at Ministry of Finance, led the budget work, etc who had very long hair. Everyone always whispered, smart guy no one is going to complain about his long hair. So I let my hair grow long so everyone assumes I must be smart.

I'm not being maudlin when I say that I miss that, but I miss it from back when I was talking with friends. I mean when I was going on for a little bit after . . . and I was on this new team, no one follows sports, they watch crap I could care less about ("Did you see Survivor?" "Did you see the Bachelor?" No. I still an iota of self-respect. I don't know how or why, either.) It was just so banal that it's pretty easy not to miss.

I suppose the side to this bit is that I sort of trapped myself in some ways. I've been here for 27 years; during any of the many rounds of layoffs, my package was always going to be near or more than a year. When I could see the writing on the wall, I just wanted my package. Then I was going to go get another job - possibly doing contract work with the package money as the cushion. But they never let me go. And with that potential package there, I never wanted to leave. It's like a perpetual carrot. That all said, I am not career oriented. I'm a problem solver and an analyst. I like it and if I can keep to myself and keep being paid, I suppose there's not much point at this point in sifting the sand.

But in agreement with your point, I do miss socializing with engaging people at work.

Are you talking about the pono player? I don't own one but I have listened and don't feel the purchase is justified. Quality is reasonable, but for me its not worth it.
