Danault also gets to play with better linemates, as he should, but it still doesn't mean that Kampf is not elite in one specific role. Danault has much more depth to his game for sure and he should still be on the Hawks if it were up to me. - Elbows15
When you call Kampf 'an elite shutdown center' without any qualifications that leaves the list wide open to compare him with. Guys like Danault, Couturier, Jordan Staal, Backlund and even Kopitar, Toews and Crosby fit the elite description far better.
If you want to call Kampf an excellent defensive center who does great work in the under appreciated areas that description works. But he is slow and has little or no offence to provide. Never will.
And you certainly wouldn't compare Kamp's level of elite with old guys like Guy Carbonneau, John Madden, Steve Kasper.

Who’s your favourite shut down / defensive center of all time? Mine was Bob Gainey, he had it all great wheels, exceptional defensively, strong, physical and he was good offensively. Troy Murray was another good one and no one can forget the rat, Dave Bolland.

Not my analogy. Its a value chart designed to assign value to corresponding draft slots based on data studied over years.
In simpler terms, CLB has 3 players on their team as compared to 1 for the Hawks. A 4th is pretty much guaranteed based on draft slot compared to the 32th pick. Which prior to this year was a 2nd round slot. The 12th pick has been a 1st rounder since 1967, - Elbows15
Sure but those charts are large generalizations are they not? They don't take into account the quality of the specific draft year. Not denying that a late round pick is less desirable than a mid-round one, but I think you have to take the available talent into account.
Who is the 3rd player on CBJ? Boqvist, Sillinger, ?? The second rounder they got is playing in Finland.
By the way - you're an ass. I read the bolded above as "thirty toothpick" in my head and now I need to sit in the corner and think about what I've done.

Gainey has 4 or 5 Selke's but he was a left winger.
Troy Murray excellent choice and did great work matching up against Gretzky.
Jacques Lemaire excellent defensive center. How about Bobby Clarke?
My favourite - Dave Keon, great 2 way center. Closest type player I have seen to Keon is J. Toews in his prime.
It does...thanks...and appreciate your clarifying that he was already well thought of in the hockey ranks. I'm admittedly not one who monitors prospects too much.
Speaking of...anyone who has watched him closely want to explain why Gaudette keeps getting the Strome treatment? Maybe he shouldn't have talked about crystals and witchcraft?

Oh I have to rethink that statement since he is burning up the league this year with 2G and 1A. Connor is looking over his shoulder and sees Kampf coming and a threat to his Art Ross chances.
Yes but I stopped quickly when Harold Ballard ran the greatest Leaf ever out of town. They don't win any of those Cups in the 60's without Keon. - RickJ

Probably because I went to his hockey school but Dave Keon was my favorite.

Reading it again, I can see why you laughed. I was attempting a little separation between us and Arizona. Let's just run with this:

It is what it is at this point. We will all undoubtedly rehash the bad contracts and decisions for the next 5, 10, 20 years, but ultimately if we really are fans of the Hawks we will try to make the best out of watching what they put on the ice. It seems they've at least got a decent interim coach on the bench. We shall see what the GM situation turns out to be.

Rockford IceHogs hire Jared Nightingale as an assistant coach.
He's a former team captain and most recently an OHL Saginaw Spirit assistant.

The youngest of three brothers, Nightingale comes from a hockey-rich family. His oldest brother, Jason, is the current Director of Analytics for the Buffalo Sabres, and his other brother, Adam, is the head coach for the USNTDP U-17 program. - LAHawk
Good for him! We can always use a little help at the Rock. Wish him the best.

You might have been thinking of his linemate ironman Doug Jarvis, who probably was Gainey's equal defensively. - LAHawk
Can’t remember the name of the Soviet coach, but he called Gainey the best hockey player in the world and that was with Wayne Gretzky on the Canadian team.
And you’re right about Jarvis, another great defensive center.
Keon, Orr and Mike Walton all had summer hockey camps in the Toronto area.
How was Mark Messier as a shutdown center? - mohel
Messy eh. Sorry.
Not sure I’d classify him as a shutdown center? He was used more in offensive situations. Definitely one of the best two way center for sure, and a mean SOB.
Always liked the Hawks alot because of Bobby Hull and the mystique of the Chicago Stadium. Nobody missed Hockey Night in Canada on a Saturday evening when the Hawks came to town in their white road jerseys. And some of the best NHL brawls ever occurred between the Hawks and Leafs.
But when you grow up an anglophone near Toronto they were the home town team and there was no choice but to hate those rotten francophone Habs.

Yeah, my Dad took me to at least none Hawk game at the Gardens every year. Twice I waited for autographs as the Blackhawk players left the building to catch the bus.
