Can’t remember the name of the Soviet coach, but he called Gainey the best hockey player in the world and that was with Wayne Gretzky on the Canadian team.

And you’re right about Jarvis, another great defensive center.

Keon, Orr and Mike Walton all had summer hockey camps in the Toronto area.

No he played for Chicago a few years ago.

Remember when Lindros was an 18 year old playing for team Canada and confronted Tikhonov who used to stand in front of his players? I thought Tikhonov was going to poop himself.

Old Viktor was an authoritarian. But Lindros would scare anybody. Must have been 6'7 on skates.

It is what it is at this point. We will all undoubtedly rehash the bad contracts and decisions for the next 5, 10, 20 years, but ultimately if we really are fans of the Hawks we will try to make the best out of watching what they put on the ice. It seems they've at least got a decent interim coach on the bench. We shall see what the GM situation turns out to be.

- Chunk

Hey, friend! We're sticking with them through thick and thin. I'm not ever going to be hyper-critical after what we've personally witnessed. The coaching story and future acquisitions to fit a certain mold, is going to be entertaining as all get out. The next GM story will have everyone making up their minds. Great stuff ahead!

Trying to recall something that escapes my memory. Didn't a Russian team once skate off the ice when confronted by the Philadelphia Flyers? All I can remember is that I never witnessed such hard and miserable checking in my life. Or, was it a dream?

Urgh… Hardman and R Johnson should be in Rockford. Khaira should be the 12th or 13th forward. Hopefully the forward group can get healthy soon.

DeBrincat - Dach - Kane
Kubalik - Toews - Hagel
Kurashev - Strome - Borgstrom
Khaira/Carpenter - Gaudette - Johnson

- DarthKane

2nd line should be 3rd line, 3rd line barely has an NHL player, 4th line has no NHL players.

Yes Sir, I think 76 the Flyers gooned it up and the Soviets left the ice. Strangely when they were told they wouldn’t be paid they came back.

He used to terrify the opponents in junior, we sometimes had seats by the glass and we were worried he’d put someone through the glass. He was an absolute beast. Problem was he never learned to keep his head up because he didn’t have to in junior.

It sure does.

At that time North American hockey was all north/south dump and chase. The Soviets used to circle back to maintain possession.

When you call Kampf 'an elite shutdown center' without any qualifications that leaves the list wide open to compare him with. Guys like Danault, Couturier, Jordan Staal, Backlund and even Kopitar, Toews and Crosby fit the elite description far better.

If you want to call Kampf an excellent defensive center who does great work in the under appreciated areas that description works. But he is slow and has little or no offence to provide. Never will.

And you certainly wouldn't compare Kamp's level of elite with old guys like Guy Carbonneau, John Madden, Steve Kasper.

- RickJ

Kampf isn't slow. Not by any stretch.

Sure but those charts are large generalizations are they not? They don't take into account the quality of the specific draft year. Not denying that a late round pick is less desirable than a mid-round one, but I think you have to take the available talent into account.

Who is the 3rd player on CBJ? Boqvist, Sillinger, ?? The second rounder they got is playing in Finland.

By the way - you're an ass. I read the bolded above as "thirty toothpick" in my head and now I need to sit in the corner and think about what I've done.

- Chunk

They aren't generalizations at all. It takes all factors into accounts. Sure, the depth of drafts is different from year to year, but taken as a whole, it establishes a means.
Jake Bean is the 3rd player. Traded for the 2nd rounder.

OK. From what I read of how they are put together, they compile the "effectiveness" of players drafted at each spot (or spot ranges at least) to assign a value to them. In my mind that is the definition of generalization as it is an average of performance across many years and different player types.

Thanks for the clarity on Bean. I thought CBJ got him through other means. It'll be interesting to see what the new GM ends up doing.

Ed Van Impe (hawks draft pick I think) hammered one of them with a body check to start it all off.

Yep, Van Impe was a Hawk but chosen by the Flyers in the expansion draft in '67 when the league expanded from 6 to12 teams.

He signed with the Hawks. Wasn't a draft pick. Picky, I know but I would have sworn he was taller than 5' 10", tho
