I don’t think you need the first overall to be good, sure it helps if there’s a sure-fire talent there, however, it’s more important that you don’t miss when you get an opportunity.
Missing on Virtanen and Juolevi really hurt the organization, whether people will admit it or not. - LeftCoaster
Especially given that they traded away several other picks because they had “the core” locked up.

First they need a new GM, and even more pressing, an actual experienced NHL coach. You can shuffle guys out of the lineup but if their style doesn’t change, neither will their results.
Secondly you start revamping the lineup, no one is untouchable imo….no one. - LeftCoaster

If we're going to try and get the 1OA, I'd rather it be next year when Bedard is available and could be the next Crosby/McDavid you build around. Problem is, FA will never allow it, and the lottery has never been kind to us.

He is a fantastic hockey player, that is strong enough to stay on his skates and not be Bambi on ice.
He is a midget that I have no problem drafting just like Hoglander, who I was surprised was available when Canucks picked him.

No probs was jesting.
So…
We not only have to tank next season to have a shot at getting him but we have to do what in the meantime to set up the race for the worst?

I would look at signing( in the off-season) Loui Erickson, Jay Beagle and Antoine Roussel, for starters, then look at the best you can get for any player on the team and fill in with some AHL calibre players.

FA hasn't allowed them to tank at all this time, but here they are
