Lucic removed from the PP. Hmm. I said it after last game, if something happens after he had dinner with Chara from the covid protocol Isles, that he should get removed from the PP at a minimum...

Sometimes I wonder if Sutter reads this forum.. but Pitlick was given time on the PP?? It's basically a waste to give our #2PP any ice time. Let them have 30 seconds if that.. especially if we're down

There aren’t really any similarities between the two. Kipper was a pretty small guy who relied on athleticism and tried to make saves. Vladar is a monster who plays the modern way of goalieing where it’s all about positioning and putting yourself in position to have the puck hit you. Kipper was also traded for for a second round pick not a third.

There’s also almost no chance he’s sticking in Calgary long term if he keeps this up. Markstrom isn’t going anywhere.

I mean more in the calmness in net and confidence. Ya, I was thinking the same... if he keeps this up, will be staying in Calgary considering Marky is signed for many more years. Oh well, let's hope he remains good as it will be good for the Flames

Oh and thanks for that clarification, i always thought kipper was traded for 3rd round pick

Yeah he's not looking good.

Any way we can trade him and pick for Tuch?

- DuranDuran

I feel bad for Mony... we all loved him before and now all of the fanbase is against him. I hope he does well because he is a good goal scorer but only with the right linemates.

Following the results of yesterday’s match, the Flames now sit squarely at 2.00 1.89 goals against average on the season. Good for 2nd 1st place in the (entire!) NHL. - Trevor Neufeld

Fixed. (Flames are the only team below 2.00 GAA.)

But Carolina has allowed only 32 goals against. And we have allowed 36 goals against.

Sean Monabad.

How else can they find enough cap room to have a chance of signing all of Tkachuk, Gaudreau and Mangiapane?
Isn't it pretty much a given that the better 88 plays the more certain Monahan gets traded no matter how he plays?

But they've only played 16 games which gives them a GAA of exactly 2.00

So Trevor it say the Flames have no injuries does that mean Ritchie is a healthy scratch?

Congrats guys. Been playing well as a team and it's limiting chances vs your goalies. Have looked a lot better than I expected. Still not sure if this group can keep it up all season long, but it makes it fun for you guys for the time being. Enjoy it while it lasts. Be it all season or just 1/4-1/2. Fun times thinking of a BoA in the playoffs. Wheel and deal Oilers vs Shut down and return Flames. Still need to start winning a few more in regulation tho. Those loser points won't keep ya in it all year. But it's fun to imagine the potential matchup now if both teams can keep it up.

It's just the whole thing about third-string goalie for a 3rd round pick. Comes in and plays with confidence and calmness. I remember seeing that when kipper came in and was playing the same way. I was young then but still I remember the same style and calmness. It will be amazing if we find another kipper in Vlader I know it's too early as he's only played few games, but i notice he is not scrambling all over. He is calm and solid position wise

The (good) dilemma is we have Marky and Vladar. Hopefully he gets enough games in to keep fresh and continues to develop. Get him signed long term so if Marky starts to decline...

He looks like an absolute rock in net. They were talking about he was discovered by the Flames and sounds like it was Sigalet who earned the credit for that one. Loving what I'm seeing out of our goalies this year. Not really many soft goals like we dealt with in the past with Hiller/Elliot or brutal giveaways like you see with Smith.

Sutter's style is really setting in and where I thought we'd be weaker this year (defence), I think we're actually stronger with the structure in place and the pairings Sutter has put together. Would love to see the third pairing be a little more stable and not give it away as often as they do, but even they have largely been fine. If Valimaki finds his game and can take Zads out of the lineup a little more often, the Flames will be in good shape this year.

And christ, the Heat are rocking it so far this year too. 10-0-2 and the top 2 lines there are KILLING it and Wolfy has (statisically) looked like an absolute beast so far. with a 931 save percentage.

I dunno why, but I'm feeling optimistic these days...

So we have a few contracts coming up. I wonder if this (early) success motivates some of the potential fence sitters resigning with the team?
JG looks like he's found his mojo, Mangipane is a world beater, secondary scoring, 7 shutouts. Tkachuk is my real concern at the moment, well he and Monahan.

Ya, its a lot better than most of us expected and for sure the "experts".
I kinda like getting no love from the media. Stay under the radar... Let McJesus and Drai the guy get all the attention!

It might get to the point where you guys are disappointed when you don't win by a shutout. Excellent start by both Goalies. I've actually never really seen anything like it. Cheers boys. Enjoy the ride.

I don't know who was suggesting that the Flames discovered Vladar, but that's nonsense. Boston drafted and developed him and he had a few fantastic AHL seasons. He was just expendable since they had so many goalies with NHL upside in their system. He wasn't a reclamation project.

People also need to pump the brakes a bit on Vladar. Has everyone already forgotten Rittich, who you could actually argue the Flames discovered, looked like the best goalie in the league while he was in the backup role?

I'm not against him by any means. I like Monahan and think that he's a quiet leader on the team and want him to succeed but his game has disappeared. I understand he had major hip surgery and all of that in the off-season but his skating has always been subpar in comparison to the rest of the league. It's his decisions with the puck that are terrible. He had Looch wide open last night and muffed the pass with no pressure on him.

He looks like a guy that's an ECHLer playing against NHLers. Poor decisions, handles the puck like a grenade, and is (still) slow. He's playing the body more, though. So that's a plus, I guess.

On a positive note:

Boy this team looks good. I was worried about the B's because of how they kind of got caved in by a COVID ravaged Isles team but I couldn't have been more wrong. Glad to see them having success and did anyone notice JG run over Haula? Well...as well as JG could run over anyone.

The shutouts will not continue BUT if we keep the gaa at 2 or less go for the gold!!!! I personally always liked sean BUT he might have primed early and is on the downside which is really too bad. The goal might be to do a bad swap with someone else hopefully an expiring contract so the end of the season the flames just let him go with 6 mill coming off the books to spread around, if the flames even sniff the second round to hold onto players is the dream!!! The team is actually achieving as it should have RIP Billy peters had them achieving until well (you know) again we have a coach there has been a lot of in between guys that could not get what they needed out of these guys.

Not suggesting that they discovered him on the whole... but that they identified him as a good asset to acquire. Bad language on my part.

And was not getting overexcited about him... but I am excited for what is in the pipeline for the Flames and when you see he and Marky play and what Wolf is doing so far in the AHL.

The biggest difference though is that Vladar looks composed, plays positionally as well as any in the game and is a known commodity. He was drafted and developed with the Bruins. Rittich (who I loved) always made the most awkward saves, never seemed comfortable.
Hell we have had some piss poor "luck" with the tendy position since Kipper really. Its nice to have a true #1, a steady, dependable back up (so far) and a prospect in Wolf that looks like the real thing too. Hope for the future and the present.

Sergeev in the USHL is posting some pretty amazing numbers, too. Chechelev played lights out in Russia a couple of years ago. The pipeline for goaltending looks pretty good right now, from a prospect standpoint.

This is what I have been saying since I started to watch Vlader. He looks composed, positionally solid and stays calm in net. Yes, with Rittich and Gillis and other goalies... they never gave that feeling of being composed and calm. I remember Gillis he was all over the net and Rittich at times was great but consistency was an issue. Let's hope Vlader keeps this up, which I think he will based on what I have seen so far. A goalie that is confident, composed and plays relaxed is a recipe for success

Really good read about Sutter and the Flames in the Athletic. Getting some well-deserved praise from his peers.
