They put their eggs in the basket of re-signing Ullmark and got burned.

The idea that this goalie tandem was intentional for tanking, considering they chose to keep Ullmark at the deadline to try and sign him is just incorrect

Yeah, the whole tanking thing should not even be happening at this point. Leave that garbage behind with the past horrible decade and move on. I like what Adams has done for the most part, but the goaltending strategy is a bad take in my long-time suffering fan eyes. This is an exciting team to watch most nights even without expectations of the playoffs, but when you score four goals a game, you should at least get a point.

I think it's similar to the prior year, in that this team doesn't know what it actually wants to do. They were talking tank in the 2020 offseason, then Eichel said "trade me if that's the direction you want to go". They did a 180 and signed Taylor Hall instead.

This summer, once they realized the likes of Ullmark had no interest in staying here, they might as well tank. This team still doesn't have a clear idea of the direction it wants to go. It's letting the circumstances make the the decision for it.

I don't think anyone really believed they were going to compete for the Cup that year, including Terry, no matter what kind of staged statement he made in front of a documentary camera. The idea was to be competitive enough to keep Eichel wanting to stick around, nothing more.
