My completely uneducated guess is that Clifford was recalled partially because his wife & kids live in LA. If you're going on a road swing, want an extra body who can slot into an NHL line-up in the event of injury, and you want to do a solid for the player, why not bring along a guy who gets to see his wife & sons?
