On a day everyone should be excited that has finally arrived, one Habs fans have waited on for far too long, it is nice to see people fighting over language.
You know. Instead of enjoying the moment and looking forward to what it may all mean.
HB never ever lets you down. |

It was a sarcastic comparison to the contents here.
If French is a prerequisite for the new Montreal GM, then using that comparison shouldn't those languages be a prerequisite in Vancouver. You do understand sarcasm don't you, it is not logic because logic would dictate you hire the best candidate, correct ?
Have you read the whole thread or just cherry picking ? |

My 2 cents on today's events
TIMMINS
For me, the biggest plus is getting rid of Timmins.
We desperately need to bring in some new blood (and philosophy) in this department, this means getting people who know how to recognize talent and potential/character ... but most importantly, emphasis should be put towards DEVELOPMENT of skills for roles that players will be asked to perform in the NHL.
A systemic approach is needed here ... plan ahead so when you need a player to perform a specific role in the NHL you already have one already waiting in Laval.
Start by fixing what's wrong in Laval and adjust from there ... this should be MISSION #1 for the new GM.
In the past (winning years), the Habs did well because they knew how to plan ahead and develop accordingly. Success is not achieved overnight, it takes careful planning.
BERGEVIN
As for Bergy, he did some good moves and some boneheaded ones too.
But one thing we can't fault him for is being too timid, he genuinely tried to make the team better.
Unfortunately, the team's poor performance at the draft table (and especially in the development phase) forced him to have to do some questionnable trades in order to fill holes in the lineup. Panic management never ends well.
However ... he's also the guy who failed to recognize his team's development system failures and chose to let Timmins in charge of that department.
This failure probably cost him his job today.

I've been following, but I'm not sure you understand what sarcasm is. Either you think it's an realistic comparison or you're being sarcastic and don't think it is. Can't be both. You're logic is all over the place.

As an Anglo, I get your point, but at the same time, the language thing in Quebec stems back to holding on to the Quebecquois culture in Quebec, in which language is a major proponent. There was a time when there were 2 teams, the Maroons and Les Canadiens, and the teams were generally split on a linguistic basis, Maroons for the Anglos, Canadiens for the Quebecquois. Eventually, they went down to one team, with the French team surviving. So yeah, for a lot the fine French folk in QC, it's more than *just* a language issue. It's a culture issue. That's why your sarcastic response falls flat, because it's about more than just language of the people of the city, lots more. I may not agree with it, but I can also understand why it's important. |

Insulting how ? Making a comparison to languages spoken in Vancouver to the situation here ? The Game is Hockey, take the most qualified and work the rest out. All this drama. - Benny Blanco
It's a pretty different situation. Vancouver was predominantly english for a long time, whereas Montreal was predominantly french for a long time although it's been bilingual for awhile.
I do think it's rather ignorant to require a french first language GM, or even one that speaks french in a bilingual city but it's not my team. If you want to put culture above performance that's one thing, but many fans don't share that culture. Others share it partially. Hire the most qualified person and to be fair I think Gorton is a solid selection.
As was mentioned previously, hiring the right interpreter is paramount. |
