this simply can't be true (insert sarcasm detector here)...

the Leafs are from the weakest division last year... I thought they were playing weak teams last year

- BorjeFan4Ever

Yes and they overpay for 4 players which is unsustainable, have weak goaltending and defense. Should have traded Nylander, Marner and two firsts for Tanev.

ya... but the Leafs are from the "weak North division" from last year.... with other weak Canadian teams... all of whom will be over their heads when they have to play the American based teams this season.

clearly teams like Edmonton, Toronto, Calgary can't complete with the rest of the NHL...

and one of the weakest of the weak Canadian teams went the Cup final last year.

where are the Canadian teams in the standings this year?

Lou will be fired before Dubas. The team needing a long rebuild just when they go to a new arena will greatly upset ownership.

The defensive play is being completely ignored after years of pointing out how important it was and how bad the Leafs weredefensively.
- RogerRoeper

yup... and if the Leafs were losing games 5-4 or 4-3 night in night out.. then the media would be ripping them for lazy and poor defensive play.

at the moment Edmonton is more exciting to watch.. no question... but the question is whether the Oilers goaltending and offense first game will stand up ... much like the Leafs of last year.

I do find it hilarious how there is so little in the media when the Leafs are genuinely playing well... and SO MUCH when they have a string of bad games.

I hope they keep giving the Woll kid more games.... see what they have there over a longer runs of games.

that was my point... that the better teams don't seem to be so weak now when they are playing better competition

It's like they are bored when the Leafs play well. The media likes it so much more when they struggle. And they still waste a ridiculous time talking about offseason contracts that cuts into actual on-ice play this season.

The interesting thing is TNT is raving about the Leafs as a cup favourite.

Leafs D and goalitending is so much better than the Oilers. Depending on Keith, Ceci, Barrie come playoff time? Good luck!

To be fair, the Isles were a middling team during the regular season in both of the last two years where they advanced to the Conference Finals. As you alluded to with the Habs glory run last playoff (and yes, I'm taking some liberties here), the Isles benefitted from the stupidity of playoff hockey and how it allows mediocre teams to play low-event hockey using aggressive obstruction tactics to advance.

The Isles suck but they figured out how to game the system. This year? Injuries and COVID protocols have knocked them off their mediocre regular season saddle and they likely won't make it to the post-season.

COVID saved them in 2020. They had lost 7 in a row and were well on their way to missing the playoffs.

Look at that roster and the aging forwards on such long term deals. They are in trouble. They won't match what they've done again.

It's INSANE to give Casey Cizikas 6 years at age 31 to play 12 minutes a night. And people say "It's "Only" 2.5 per...Uh, you female dog about Mitch marner getting 1.5 too much non stop...

And you add Palmieri, Martin, JGP, Lee, Nelson. They are only going to get worse.

Cizikas is a proven playoff performer. Please go and watch the tape

He took less per year in order for more years on the deal.

You have an unhealthy obsession with NYi

So you're going to reward guys based on the past? He's 31. Give me an example of a 4th liner getting that term...

It's a horrible deal.
