I am curious why you think he would get way, way more than say, Brandon Carlo. That is the only comparable I could think of: similar position, height, RHD, 2nd pairing, same age I believe.
Carlo signed for 6 years at 24+ - PT21
Depending on what stat you are looking at, Risto has a much more impressive resume than Carlo. Honesty, I think Risto is adequately compensated where he is right now, but as a FA he will look for a substantial pay raise and why not? Carlo did sign a team friendly deal to stay in Boston. |

You didn't realize that when they first traded for him? Fletcher boxed himself in. I hope you're paying attention to Dougie Hamilton and seeing what a defenseman who is really one of the best in the NHL looks like. - MJL
Offensively, Hamilton is one of the best ... defensively .. he has his flaws. But I will say you don't pay Hamilton for his defense, you pay him for what we are seeing, his ability to drive the offense. The Flyers only get this, not at the same level, from Ellis, which is why they are struggling so badly right now. |

Boston always seems to get away with more reasonable deals…Risto coming off a 5 + mil deal, high first round pick…we’ll see.. That’s where I think he’ll slot in. |

No, he isn't flawed. He is legitimately one of the top 5 defenseman in the NHL. He has dominated this game. |

Boston does get a lot of players on team friendly deals, but there is a downside here in that you end up with complacent players. Players want to play for Boston because they like the area and the team, but some of those same players don't show up when it counts, e.g. Rask, Carlo and Hall. |

Offensively yes, given he is playing the Flyers, there is not a lot to defend. |

I just looked.
Carlo's stats are better in possession, goals%/60, XG%/, SCF% and HDC%.
Whats left?

All around. That is exactly what being one of the best in the league looks like.

Yes 9 shots through two periods. But right now not even in the top 40 in defensive scoring in the league. Is that worth $9M+ per? |

Yes, well Carlo also plays for one of the best defensive structured and disciplined teams in the league, so of course these numbers look good. Like I said, it depends on what your favorite stat is. If you are old school like me and care more about points, goals and +/-, the story would be very different. |

Absolutely. The difference between 40th and 16th is 2 points.

not to me, I don't believe in paying defenseman $9M+, I don't care who they are. In todays game, those contracts belong to elite forwards. |

It's the first time you actually gave him blame when it was deserved. I'm not absolving him. I'm just saying how screwed up their systems play is. - MJL

That's an absurd opinion. That element is one of the most critical element for any good team to have. You simply won't be a top team without one. They play 25 minutes plus a game and dominate. They are the key to offense in this league.
Did you see his numbers after two periods? He does this game in and game out. He is worth every penny. He would transform the Flyers.

I think Ellis can do almost the same thing for about $3M cheaper, IMO. |
