I don't have a hard time blaming the coaches. Just saw another slot chance for the Devils. The Flyers going back to all of last season have struggled with AV's strong side overload/man to man coverage scheme. - MJL
well, historically the overload system works when you have the players that can execute it. I mean AV has brought two teams to the finals and he would have won the cup in Vancouver if Luongo didn't puke on his skates. However its up to the GM to bring in the players that can execute it, and right now its clear to me these players can't. |

Right about what exactly? Hextall signed JVR to a big 5 year contract because I perceive he thought this Flyers team was ready to contend, right? Was he right at the time and was signing JVR a good thing in hindsight? - jd250
Hextall had the right idea in that he realized in a "cap" world the team needed to build through the draft, but clearly his execution was lacking. Provorov was a good not great pick. After That guys like Sanheim and Rubstov were OK and awful. Farabee and Frost may pay off, but who really knows. I won't condemn the Patrick pick....that was hockey karma. Homer is and was a hockey dinosaur...Hextall was flawed and Fletcher seems overmatched. I see no reason to hold onto G...can't imagine why he wouldn't want to move on to a team that can win next year so get what you can and move on. Unless Frost and Farabee suddenly blossom into something special soon this years Flyers are going nowhere |

I would fully support a tank. The drafting at 15 thing wasn’t going anywhere. Whatever this is now is even worse , I’ll give you that. Wasn’t allowed to be seen through, what was he going to be given, 7 years to get some quality players? Where is the guy, the Giroux , coming from? You can’t win with a bunch of TKs and Sanheims. Would we have gotten a marquee free agent, idk. - ClaudeFather
People get all worked up at the use of that term. Maybe "rebuild/full rebuild" is a more neutral term.
Its not like it is like throwing a game or a season. Look at the people who have overseen critical rebuilds in recent years: Shanahan in Leafs, Yzerman in Detroit, Roy/Sacic in Colorado. If its good enough for HOFers, why isn't it good enough for Hextall/Holmgren/Chuck?
In all these rebuilds, key players who were at the peak of their careers were shipped elsewhere. Leafs sent Kessels packing. Avs sent Duchene and Varlamov and Stastny (I think). Wings sent Mantha, who was averaging about 65 points a season pace over the last 2 seasons, and was only 27. Tampa sent Richards and Boyle away before the 2 drafts leading to Stamkos/Hedman. At that time, Richards was 26 and the previous 3 seasons was averaging almost a ppg.
The strategy is pretty simple. You identify the young guys who are going to be part of the future and keep them. You let many star veterans go for the most part if it is unlikely they will play a part when that future comes. The mentorship is done by supplemental vets, not star players tied to long, expensive contracts.
Here, if you dare mention that guys like Couts or Voracek or Giroux are definitely good, even very good players but at the wrong time for the team, zillions of people's are in arms. We sign and keep every frikking player until they are way, way past their prime.
And you wonder why we can't contend? What gives us the right to believe we can contend when we want the team to be relevant even when rebuilding? Other teams are willing to endure more pain; Its only deserving they are better repaid. |

I posted the other night during the Canes game that I think its time to move on from G, if this year continues to head in its current direction, its better for the CF to trade G at the deadline and get something for him. |

I think the Flyers have scored more short-handed goals in the past two games and 5 on 5 or PP goals! Maybe the Flyers should take more penalties! |

i think that coaches, no matter what sport, should adapt the scheme to the players strengths. GM can bring guys in to support. But not playing to players strengths is a big coaching mistake

Laughton with a man's goal. - Pelle31Forever
I look at Laughton’s goals and he seems to be able to create for himself. He just doesn’t do much for the players around him. |

Nice goal. Of late, what we’ve seen is that the only goals we’re getting are individual efforts. Take it though |
