Just a question from my end... why do we have to respect her popularity? Does her popularity make her music any more legitimate than a lesser known artist's? The idea that I have to reserve some kind of reverence for artists that are beloved by the masses even if I don't like the music is kind of silly.

I think so, she's legitimate from the perspective of being relevant and appealing to a wide audience (not named Mussel or Law or Fakesy or Turdsy). I'd flip the channel if she came on but I think the respect is simply acknowledging that she must be good at what she does because she's both relevant and popular a massive audience.

I hate the (frank)ing Habs and they were lucky as (frank) last year but I gotta respect the playoff performance and tip my cap.

While I respect your opinion, as someone that enjoys a wide variety of genres and generations of music, there are many amazing female vocalists that came before that were truly exceptional. I have difficulty granting any musician greatest of all time for that reason. Having seen Nicks several times, including what most would consider her prime years, she was great. So were Aretha Franklin, Koko Taylor, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Maria Callas and scores of others.

I’m not into vanilla. I’m a rock and roll guy. Many awesome female metal singers out there that have voices that kick ass on most popular female voices. Floor Jansen (Nightwish) has the best female voice in all of music imo. Extremely diverse and talented. But most people don’t even know she exists.

But do you have to "respect her popularity"? No, but I think you gotta kinda respect that her talent has propelled her to success and continues to do so a decade later. No? From what I read she writes a lot of her songs...I get it, the subject of the songs are not for everyone. But, its not easy to write a song, be able to successfully sing that song and have it appeal to people emotionally.
IMO.

Many things are a matter of taste. I for one don't believe that a burger at harvey's is the greatest meal on earth, nor do I believe this painting is worth the $43.8 Million US that it sold for. I really like Stevie Nicks though, just not one for claiming that any musician is the greatest. The one that I enjoy listening to the most - ok, but greatest of all time - hard to substantiate. When considering musicians, I do have a reverence for technical excellence, including vocalists.

That was never the thesis (at least from my part). But to deny that luck played a significant role is absurd.

In my case, I've broken down specifically what I feel were major factors that assisted the Habs advancing and given them the reductive moniker of "luck".

Having said that, I think perhaps, a lot of the angst is per semantics: "luck" vs. clearly articulated advantages.

For female artists, it's Joni Mitchell or Carole King.

Nobody else is in the same league.
