I would agree both exceptional and great songwriters as well.

For me, you need to write your own stuff to be considered GOAT.

Can't believe you racists won't even give any credit to the greatest artist of all time

For female artists, it's Joni Mitchell or Carole King.

Nobody else is in the same league.

Joni was/is an inventor and an underrated guitar player. She looks at a guitar and say nah, that doesn’t work for me and creates these bizarre tunings to fit the sounds she wants. It’s crazy to try to play her songs.

Joni was pretty versatile, very good as a back up singer.

Well there is a distinction there for sure. For me some great artists aren’t necessarily great singers. But some great singers can’t write anything.
I wouldn’t call Bob Dylan a great singer but he’s a great artist.

Hendrix thought she was pretty cool. He brought his reel to reel into Le Hibou coffee house in Ottawa in 1968 (same place I saw James Cotton) and recorded her show.
The recording has just been released.

Many things are a matter of taste. I for one don't believe that a burger at harvey's is the greatest meal on earth, nor do I believe this painting is worth the $43.8 Million US that it sold for. I really like Stevie Nicks though, just not one for claiming that any musician is the greatest. The one that I enjoy listening to the most - ok, but greatest of all time - hard to substantiate. When considering musicians, I do have a reverance for technical excellence, including vocalists.

- winsix

Heck, the "greatest of all-time" debate gets sticky even within the context/confines of one's own personal taste.

There are "phases" I go through where The Beatles are my favourite group ever and others where Pink Floyd reign supreme. Sometimes it's Led Zeppelin, etc. It's an ever shifting landscape on a personal level.

Agree with this, another important distinction to make is technical excellence vs. a pleasing voice. A singer like Freddy Mercury, Roy Orbison or Bocelli vs. a voice that is popular. Presley was technically an excellent singer, he wrote very little, still a remarkable artist for me - at the very least for his interpretations. It was partly a function of the period though, Sinatra and Crosby were great singers - all their material was written by others.

I have more respect for little known artists that grind to eke out a living making music that they believe in
- TheMussel

Ya me too but all I'm trying to say is that I think we still all respect that she's accomplished something.

I get that Rolling Stone likes to put put The Greatest lists to generate hits/sell mags but I don’t see the need for any lists other than the ones Aetherial used to do.

My phases included a time when all I listened to was jazz and bluegrass. That makes no sense.

Roy Orbison's voice is just mind-boggling. In Dreams casts my soul to the sky every time.

Hmmm. Good questions.
"Does her popularity make her more legitimate than lesser known artists?" IMO no not at all, but many feel this way.
"Do you have to reserve some kind of reverence for artists that are beloved by masses?" IMO no not at all. When it comes to music, movies, "celebrity", the masses are usually not to be followed

But do you have to "respect her popularity"? No, but I think you gotta kinda respect that her talent has propelled her to success and continues to do so a decade later. No? From what I read she writes a lot of her songs...I get it, the subject of the songs are not for everyone. But, its not easy to write a song, be able to successfully sing that song and have it appeal to people emotionally.
IMO.

Well to show respect someone is to give someone regard or admiration. To respect someone is to show them a special kind of attention.
- TheMussel

We've wittled this fine debate down to semantics I think.

I think respect can mean anything from "agree to recognize" to "admire or esteem".

I've only meant the lower range of the definition.

I've been listening to a lot of drone music, ambient techo and so on. Spotify is so great for finding totally new genres. Also white noise like airplane cabin sounds or furnace blowers. My number one track on Spotify last year was Standing Box Fan sounds. It's great because now when I hear a fridge buzzing or whatever, I can dig it. It's like going to see white noise live.

Also Junior Murvin is a criminally underrated singer.

Absolutely love the Beatles. Ringo's all starr band concert has been rescheduled at Casino Rama and I'm taking my son. I've seen Ringo about 15 times - never disappointed, always a great band. The first tour he did with the all starr band included Joe Walsh, Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Billy Preston. Hoping to take him to a McCartney show, if one materializes.

I'm a fan of white noise for work, and there's a guy that hooks up a modular synth to mushrooms on youtube which is pretty fun

Then if I need to really concentrate it's

Anyone see the apparent memo in Eks blog about covid and the league?

I don't see anything on TSN but maybe on twitter to confirm?

With that said, Bruins coach and edmonton cancelled practice. I wouldn't be surprised if they are clamping down with new variant. As well as, NFL said they were tightening rules as well. I think the leagues are cautious about losing more games.

I will!

I like this forum because the rumours and hockey talk is meaningless droning noise, so I can just get lost in the rhythms and textures.
