The Rangers are trending in the right direction but they still have a ways to go to become a legit contender. They also got extremely lucky to get both Panarin and Fox. Without that fortune, they are a significantly lesser team.
- MJL

How was it luck?? They had the foresight to outbid everyone for Panarin wno was a UFA...and with Fox they gave up two 2nds to get him before he became a UFA and could have gone anywhere...Was Brassard for Zibanejad and Spooner for Strome luck?/..Trading Nash and getting Lindgren?...good scouting and decisions

The Flyers just picked up their 3rd waived player this season. What does this tell us?

That our team consisted of some guys that would have not made most teams

Personally I didn't want Patrick from day one! A kid that young with an injury history like that is a major red flag!! Can only speak for myself, but that's how I felt. Makar is an absolute stud and game changer. I also wanted Fletcher to pick Caufield and he passed on him twice for what? A defender that's currently struggling in the AHL? I mean, Caufield isn't lighting up the NHL, but at least he's cutting his teeth at the NHL level. All the GMs are to blame for this failure. Meanwhile the dreaded Rags have built a legit Cup contender with lots of young talent. Thanks....no Thanks!

Exactly!! Saying it was simple luck totally discredits the TREMENDOUS job Jeff Gorton did as GM driving the rebuild.

God we are so screwed. I have zero faith in the people making the decisions.

Cliff seems panicked RN. Some of his longer term moves (Risto, especially) were solid. As were some of his picks. The better energy levels in Colo game suggest team is happy to have AV & MT gone. We’ll have to see if it stabilizes.

We disagree on Risto....THAT was panic move I believe. And a move that was done for the sake of making a move.

We will know in about 10 games, since historically this is how long it takes a new coach to get everyone comfortably playing their system when a change occurs mid season.

From Mike Sielski of the Inquirer:

I couldn't express this any better myself, to me its completely spot on!

- jd250

His comment is a tautology. They are exactly where they are based on talent found, developed and retained: that can be said about every team. Its the equivalent of Parcell's "You are what your record is".

The comment can be made sharper. The Flyers are exactly where they should be based on where they have drafted.

Yeah it was luck. Panarin chose the Rangers in free agency, and they had the cap room to sign him. It's like they found in a needle in a haystack.
- PLindbergh31

It is always partly luck when a player excels but a substantial part was not luck. They had the balls to publicly commit to a rebuild after 3 consecutive 100+ point seasons. They shipped out salary and well known names so that they could get even better players. Guys like Panarin are the result. They were willing to risk bad seasons for not settling for token playoff appearances. They went the anti-flyers way. I am very glad they are having success.

Gorton was a great hire for Habs. I find it telling they are sitting on 10+ mil LTIR money, and not making short term moves for the sake of"keeping up appearances" after a SCF run. They are keeping Ducharme for the season, and have already committed to it. That's good stuff.

Its nice to see big market teams do things the honest way instead of the way we do things.

McKinnon was complaining after the last playoffs that he was in the league 8 years and hasn't won anything yet........we haven't even drafted our mckinnon yet ......yikes
Even though a rebuild isnt guaranteed to win, id much rather be a regular playoff contender than not

I do love this kind of crap. You do realize that most hockey writers give us a top 10 prospect pool, I hope? Cliff needs to stop picking up discards and promote some of our highly regarded talent. While he is at it, he should try to see if he can connect the dots between the Phantoms’ play and the HC who performed so poorly FOR MANY YEARS as an assistant with the big club.

It was not luck really. Both wanted a big payday. And NYC.

I don’t think so. There is a lot there. He got some bad habits in Buffalo but has size, speed and a hard shot with an edge. I think it is a good move. I also like Hayes who still appears to be hurt.

The Rangers are light years ahead of the Flyers in overall talent….they have done a good job drafting, trading and signing. That’s how you can avoid a BS full blown rebuild that has absolutely no guarantee of success.
- landros 2

Look at the names they traded away/did not resign in span of 3-4 years. I just randomly went through their rosters ... am sure I am missing a couple more players.

Hagelin
Nash
Zucarrelo
Brassard
Girardi
Hagelin
Talbot
Hayes
McDonagh
JT Miller
Shattenkirk

Rebuilds don't have to be done through draft alone. Nor was there any "guarantee" their rebuild would be quick or would even succeed. But they broke a cycle of what they correctly perceived was of mid-level stagnation even before they were forced to. Hats off to them.

Do you know why hockey writers give us a top 10 prospect pool? Because of volume.

Now go back, and check which of our current prospects crack a top 10 prospect pool individually. To help you out, I have provided their names below this sentence.
