Ha ha. Forgive the intrusion, says the man, while wading into the daily fracas. You are the best.
2nd bold: This.
I am using that decision as an exemplar of the sort of seemingly reactionary, risk-avoiding, profit preserving decision-making that plagues this franchise.
As for good, what good does any such discussion do over here? - PT21

And based on the dataset so far, you have to admit they would have been correct. - PT21
It's worse then I thought. The variables between the two teams are numerous. |

Soooooo. In all honesty, BESIDES firing Fletcher....
If you're the GM what is the first move you make, IF nothing we have can increase our capital in the lottery? |

Sounds good to me. Is this more salary dump or do you expect something to come back since he's a rental and his contract is up? Or both

He's on an expiring contract so why would it be a salary dump? Why trade him if you're not getting something back. |

Do you really think Fletcher is the problem here? He came in 2019 with the mandate of building around the core group that was here and compete for a championship, and I think he has tried to do that. But at some point, the realization has to set in that the core group that was here is JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH to build around! Hart is still young so he has much more development to do, but Provey, Sanheim, TK, G, Jake, JVR and Couts were simply not good enough to build around. Its time for big reset. - jd250
Fletcher signing Couts to an 8 year client before the start of the year is costing the money on the cap for 8 years. That was not a good move. The team hasn’t improved since he has been here

You would want prospects, not picks, imo. Carolina, Avs and Isles would be possible candidates.
The 2nd player to go would be Risto.
Sadly, not much more you could do. There is no other guy except Hart a contending team would really need given the contracts they are signed to.

Unless they make other moves or would have a player out for the season. Carolina and the Avs would not be able to take on Giroux. |

at least they'll break the streak against Arizona - 2Real I wouldn't put any money on that. That will be their 5th game in seven nights and the Yotes have been playing better as of late. Their indifferent skating ability really shows up at the end of busy stretches. I'm guessing they get skated out of the building tomorrow night.

Well, few contending teams would be able to, even with max retention, so yeah, I am assuming othe moves.
With Risto, perhaps a RHD injury or just need. Avs could use someone like him, (current form, not BUF form) honestly, in the inevitable showdown with Vegas. |

Girard spent that last 3 games of that series being rag dolled. He was physically bullied into errors.
Just saying.

I want a top 5 pick....if we get THAT, we can maneuver for whoever we really like....if we can swap our pick + for number 2?
Suddenly we could get the next Patrick Kane in Matt Savoie.
That's a good start, yes? |

I’m not getting all the uproar over couturier and his contract. When it was signed it was a wonderful deal. He took a discount and he wants to play here. We should probably be thankful that he does.
I know he’s not playing well, but the team and organization as a whole is in such bad shape nobody, NOBODY is passing the eye test.
I advocated for the flyers to put him on the market this summer/year. I understand why they didn’t.
He is someone who can stay and anchor the team through a rebuild. He will get back to playing the way we all know he is capable of playing. When the flyers are ready to turn a corner, they will be glad they have him to take on a lot defensive situations and dirty work. His contract won’t prevent them from anything long term.

Only 1 guy causing "uproar", afaik....but in his defense:
If Couturier plays the way he is doing now, hey, great re-signing. He is essentially invisible, making errors, and can be a nice cap anchor.
Problem is, I agree this is a blip. He will revert back to trend. Now, Flyers are far from turning a corner. They have many long term contracts that are huge burdens. They might actually be worse off than when Hextall took over, both in terms of talent and finances.
My guess, it will take 5 years to climb out of this hole. Doesn't matter who is GM, who is coach. During those 5 years, during which we will not even skirt contention, he will probably worsen our draft position by at least 5 spots. After that, he will be, at best, an expensive, aging 7.5 mil 3C?
How many teams have had one of those when they are contending? Usually, those guys tend to be vets signed on short term deals (Like, say, Eric Staal last year).
