I have a hypothetical situation for you guys...

its the 2023 off-season and LaFreniere is a restricted free agent. He's been improving every year since his draft. We dont have a lot of cap flexibility. Now, here comes Montreal and they offer sheet LAF for 7m per year. What do we do?

The offer sheet compensation is a 1st, 2nd and 3rd round pick which Im sure MTL couldnt care two fks about if they got LAF.

Are you still saying that if he has a 20g 30a season?

I don't see 50 pts as being worth 7mil a year. But, I guess in todays climate that's good enough.

My issue with Laf at this point, is his inability to separate, with a few exceptions he looks like he's skating in mud.

Ok, 5.5m offer sheet, which we probably cant match either. 1st and 3rd compensation.

Well, would you have thought MTL would offer sheet Aho, and then get it right back on the offer sheet to Kotk? MTL hasnt been shy about. They will do what they can to get their second son back.

Who on this team can separate? The whole offense is driven through board play. Its not the style of this team. This team is incredibly ugly to watch when they move forward.

For LAF, I dont think they care tbh. There will be a parade in the streets of MTL if they get him through an offer sheet like that.

So, you're saying you close your eyes every time Panarin, Strome, Zib or Kreider are on the ice???

Panarin is an exception, but he gets pressed a lot and turns over the puck a bunch.

Kreider is one of the fastest guys on the ice, but he separates without the puck. Hes not skating up the ice with the puck, hes chipping it in and chasing it because he knows hes faster without it than with it. He also knows hes more likely to turn it over.

Zib? Whats Zib done this year so far? Separation...? Hes gotta separate his mind from his ass first. Yea sure the points are there, but were far from the Zibanejad we saw last year after he recovered from COVID and started flying down the ice.

I cant call what Strome does separating. Maybe, like Panarin, teams are starting to give him a little more respect/space to not get burned with Panarin on the ice. But I wouldnt call it separating.

Separating is what the Avs did to us. Skating through and around us like we were cones.

By the way, dont get me wrong. What the Rangers are doing is working, but speed and separation is not exactly what Id call it.

The best I can compare it to would be in MMA what they call 'dirty boxing' or in boxing kind of a 'rope a dope'. They use speed, but they take you into the boards and grind you down. Try to get you into making a mistake. If youve ever played hockey, its like doing suicide's for 2 hours straight. Stop, start, stop, start, back, forth, back, forth until someone finds someone out of position for a high quality shot. Its not pretty but it works for them.

Ok, perhaps a poor choice of words. He's still a below average NHL skater. Actually, his current linemates are both excellent skaters.

I think LAF and Gauthier have pretty good chemistry. Chytil sort of feels like hes there but not with them as far as the mental aspect. Having a feel for where they are and doing his own thing.

LAF doesnt have the speed to separate in the way we want, but I think he has the hockey IQ to make the smart / easy play that could lead to chances. I am so confident that if they got a different C between LAF and Gauthier the line would be more productive in their possession and scoring.

Good news is, he's very young, and has time to improve his skating. I think Chytil may be second to Krieder in leading the team in straight forward speed.

So much speed, and nothing to add to it.

I know he scored last night, but I'm done with Fil Chytil! Either move him to wing or send him packing! We've all said it, he is alone out there and hardly looks to pass to an open teammate, not that there were many open spaces last night but Holy S#%$ Batman, look around once in awhile! Move him to the right of Strome, move Rooney to 3C and put Dryden Hunt on 4th line. After that, find a suitor for Filip Chytil or make him watch from above while we bring in Morgan Barron and give him a shot! Something pleas soon before i put my foot through my flat screen! Get well soon Igor!

Rangers have recalled Keith Kinkaid from Hartford and reinstated Greg McKegg from COVID-19 protocol. I would expect Kinkaid to backup Alexandar Georgiev tomorrow in Buffalo to give Igor Shesterkin a little more time.

Morgan Barron and Adam Huska have been sent down. #NYR

I wish they would bench Chytil and give Barron a couple games between LAF and Gaut.

This is all a pretty fair assessment. But, really what I was getting at was that those players I listed use skating and passing to make plays, not cycling so much.

Well the skating is usually as a result of dump and chase, board play hockey which is so annoying to watch sometimes, especially on the PP.

Most of the offense this season is being generated from the point. If you think about the shape of a diamond, thats how Id assess our offense.

Its a little annoying that they dont cycle because those starts and stops is how you wear down a defense and get them to back off.

So the average NHL team value increased from $653 million to $865 million this year but we’re only expecting the cap to increase by $1M.

Something doesn’t add up there.
