So he brought in vets last year and now he needs to get rid of some vets. Makes sense. Change the culture again? Last year you were sick and tired of waiting and draft picks take too long to make the team. Now you say they need to get younger, faster and add more skill. Can't make it up. - MJL
Ok, lets have a conversation here. Clearly the farm system of the Flyers is not as deep with talent as we thought or were lead to believe. Players that were drafted by Fletcher have good potential but they need more time to develop. We also thought last year was an anomaly because of the Covid effects of lack of practice time and isolation of the younger players like Hart. Thus the decision was rightly made to try to fill some obvious holes and get this team moving back towards contention. The players that Fletcher brought in are all good players that improved the talent of this team. Ellis is a true number 1 defenseman that this team lacked. Risto is a solid top 4 defenseman that gives this team muscle on the backend that is sorely needed. Brassard gave this team center depth they sorely needed with the injury to Hayes. Atkkinson is a shoot first forward and good penalty killer, that was cheaper than Jake who was neither a shooter or PKer, and so on. On paper this team should have been much better than last year and even better than the 2019 Flyers that came within 1 win from the final 4. This season did not work out as hoped. Ellis has been hurt pretty much the entire year. Hayes is not close to himself, and several veteran players are just not getting it done, i.e. Couts, TK, JVR, etc. The head coach has been fired and the team is arguably in a deeper funk than they were even at any time last year.
I think Fletcher can say, hey I tried with this group, I really tried. I brought in several players that should have upgraded our defense, penalty killing and scoring but instead the core group on this team has completely gone into a terrible funk. So what is left to do? I agree with you, lets not continue to trade young players and picks for more aging veterans. We certainly can't keep the status quo. So what is left? Trade as many core veterans as you can and try to draft as high as possible so you can rebuild through the draft. But unlike the Hextall years where we tried to build up the farm system but also maintain a playoff team on the ice, we need to commit to rebuilding completely. This means trading players like Giroux, JVR, Risto, Braun, Yandle, Brassard, Thompson, Jones and even TK, Sanheim and Lindblom. Fletcher must rebuild this team with younger, faster and more highly skilled players that can play today's style of game at a high rate of speed. Build around Hart, Ellis, Provorov, Couts, Hayes, Atkinson, Farabee, Frost and Laughton. Next year bring up York, Attard, Zamula and Foerster and then augment the rest with hopefully some good draft picks and smart free agent signings. This is the approach I would take anyway. |

Between Morin and Patrick, I don't know who to feel sorry for more. - Tomahawk
Both of them. It really sux to see a player basically just make it to the top of his profession only to be haunted by injuries that prevent the full attainment. We know of NoPa and Morin. How many others from other teams are there that we don't know of? It's just a crappy and unfortunate nature of this game. |

Keeping the same group as last year would’ve been just as bad. Imo he had to attempt something. And on paper we should be a better team. Just how it works sometimes. Same as the best team on paper usually doesn’t win the cup. |

Absolutely has to be Morin. Patrick comes off as being entitled to being good and not questioned.
That may not be the case but his smirks and attitude during press availability came across that way.

Yes he had to change things thats for sure. However the people got suckered into thinking last year was a covid mess. There are people on here that thought our team was a lot closer to the good team that did the 30 game streak we went on 2 years ago, and not what we showed last year. And now we know. ....

True and now we know, but going into this past off season, there was every bit of evidence to support that this team was much better and closer to what 2019 was like so I believe it was worth the risk to shake things up, bring in better players and see what happened. Its just unfortunate it did not work out. |

Agree with everything except for dumping Sanheim. He is still young, and with an overall better D group plus better forwards, he could go back to the days when he used to be allowed to pinch and take shots in high percentage areas and join the rush as the trailer. Right now, he has to "stay at home" because we can't afford to pinch as much. I don't know if CF has the guts to move on from Risto after paying such a high price, let's hope someone else is in that chair. Buyouts will be needed too, as it may be hard to "trade" some of these players as you've indicated. There has to be a market in order to move them.

I applaud your eternal optimism. I really do but I wonder what it's going to take for you to have an honest assessment of what the Flyers have done? The moves Fletcher has made and the direction the team has taken since firing Hextall, have not been good decisions. As a GM, that Nashville was willing to trade Ellis for the package that he gave them, should've given him pause. Taking on that contract with a player with a questionable injury history was a colossal blunder. As was trading what he did for Ristolainen for a mediocre player in the final year of his contract. While Atkinson has some good qualities as a player, the Flyers traded more skill and speed, which is what you want to add for Atkinson. They failed to adequately replace the qualities that they lost with Voracek.
I don't think you even realize it but what you're advocating for is the same thing that Hextall was trying to do. How you change with the wind as to what approach the team should take is really amazing. The bottom line is that upper management and Fletcher really screwed up. Fletcher should be fired but that won't happen. The question is what do they do moving forward? Do they smarten up or just continue down the same path? I told you repeatedly last off season that what the Flyers did was far more likely to damage their future than to help it.
What the Flyers need to do is move some players like Giroux and Ristolainen. Create cap space. Use that as a weapon to try and take advantage of teams that need cap space and acquire future assets. If they need to, bring in short term cheap vets as stop gaps and return to the approach that Hextall was taking. If they're smart but they're not.
