Guessing 50/50. You don't throw away a draft pick and $6M dollars of the owners money just to get revenge. And wouldn't revenge be even sweeter if the player turns out to be pretty good?
And yeah, I mean Staal. KK's pretty physical. He should become a decent middle-six guy. He won't ever be as good defensively as JS, but not many guys are. - Tomahawk
I have seen KK play extensively, esp in playoffs. I disagree there is any similarity to JS. Staal was a beast along the boards. But that is a digression.
50% also seems very high to me. But that's also a digression. 50% serves to prove my point. If you remember, that original point was that a team that expects to contend is willing to accept a lot more risk than us, who are way out of contention. It should be the other way around.
Magnus is one of the very geniuses around. Just a raging, raging genius. And also very adept in fantasy soccer picks. Its funny you talk about the macho coonotations of his game, becaue Magnus is a mauler in Chess.
You mentioned Kasparov, the 2nd greatest player, at least in terms of FIDE ratings, in history, I believe. Well, Kasparov is in awe of Magnus. Especially in speed games.
Magnus by the way, has mentioned that Kramnik and Karpov, two former world champions, are entitled to their "stupid opinions." He was also asked which player in history he most admired, and he named himself, a few years ago
No, what happened on the 7th was a historic, once in a century blunder, by N, who squandered a winning position that might have turned the series around to the present, where it is essentially over. - PT21
For Kasparov to be in awe of anyone speaks volumes. Garry loved himself some Garry, and bends the knee to no one.
Ever see his verbal battles with Putin?
Now that it’s over, I have a lot of homework to do digesting those games.
7.5 to 3.5, right?
Susan Polgar came to DC a few years ago, and I went to see her movie down on Q St. I brought my daughter, who was only 2 or so at the time, but we got to chat. She was thrilled to see my kid could set up a board and properly move the pieces.
I’m not pressuring her to play competitively, but she’s already a killer at 8. Very proud dad.

They weren't just verbal. Putin had him arrested and beaten.
By the way, N disintegrated today after what happened on the 7th and Magnus retained his crown.
I was watching live when this happened. Here is the reaction of Giri, the current world # 7, who was providing live commentary (1 min vid)
EDIT: watch Magnus's reaction. He cannot believe it.

You are going to replay those games? That is too much dedication for me. Good for you.
And good for the young Ms. Hesh. You should indeed be proud.
If she watches Queen's Gambit, make sure you explain that show is trash as far as real life chess is concerned.

lol. Yeah. It’s a drama.
I quit teaching chess about two years ago. When I was going back to school again for another degree at Maryland, I took a side gig at a company who hired me out to teach at between 8-10 schools a semester. From there, I picked up students who wanted lessons on the side. At night, I knew a few places for cash games.
So often, I’d pick a game or two from the championships and try to make a lesson out of it for my most advanced kids. Sometimes a full game, but often just major points, ! moves, ? Blunders, etc.
Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and the Potomac were a real honey pot.
Sure. Just like Frost could become the heir apparent to say, Matt Duchene. Lets say that is x% of the motivation in a Preds OS next year. And trolling is 100-x%.
But if OS is outlandishly high, then for only 1 year, includes a $6 signing bonus, there is a cheesesteak icon on their press release, and then they put him on the Admirals after 1 game, how high would you say value of x% is?
ps: Also, did you really mean Staal? Staal is a horse, a beast. KK plays nothing like that. - PT21
The reason why the OS is only for one year is because they don't want to pay the player that high of a salary on multi year deal. The risk is that KK can just accept his Q offer. They want to negotiate a multi year deal at a lower rate with him. This has all been explained to you previously.
Yes, he meant Staal. He also mentioned Trocheck. A player doesn't have to be a carbon copy of another player to be a future replacement at the position.
We gave up one 1st. Big whoop. That draft is over already. We have all our 1sts going forward. Ellis is still going to be a good Veteran Dman for this team going forward. Like I said Risto will be dealt. Yes most rebuilding teams have aging contracts on them, they tend to trade for them. Cap space isnt needed during a rebuild. The goal is to get and develop talent. Cap space is needed later to keep that talent and fill the holes. - xShoot4WarAmpsx
They gave up a 1st and a 2nd. Big whoop? That's absurd. For a team in the Flyers position, every first round pick is valuable. Is big whoop the best argument you can make? You think Risto will be dealt. He might. You don't know what they will get in return. Most rebuilding teams tend to trade for older aging players on multi year deals? When they do, what do they also get? Cap space absolutely is needed during a rebuild. You use it to attain assets for the future from teams who are in a bind. You state that the goal is to get and develop talent. Do you know how you do that? With draft picks! Some of the stuff I read sometimes is absolutely mind boggling.

No, that was not the original point. That was your point that you tried to make. It was effectively squashed.

I was certainly never good enough to coach chess. I have always been a dabbler. I play speed chess on lichess. (blush).
I have however gone to many tournaments as a spectator, especially with the son of a friend in the Boston area, who was a ranked player for his age in MA. And QG was so false in the way , as false to chess as say, GoodWill Hunting is to math. Just rubbish, really.
But anyway, what happened couple of days ago (previous video) is a teachable moment for you. Lots of drama surrounding it. It is arguably the greatest blunder in the history of chess at that level in the last 100 years. Its certainly easy enough to explain to your young daughter, and the videos will provide extra color.
Here is another pair of GM's, also in disbelief when it happened.I get a kick out of watching their reactions.
Now you're back to draft picks not mattering because they take 3 years to make it. It was just hours ago that you were saying they have to get younger, faster and more skilled. That they have to stop trading picks for vets. It's unbelievable and really sad. The wind must of changed direction. "oh please get off the future asset nonsense" - MJL
You are just dumb, or thick, or both! I am advocating getting HIGH draft picks, not mid or late first round picks, but HIGH draft picks to jump start this rebuild! I guess if anything I have come around to PT21's way to thinking in this regard, the best chance the Flyers have to truly draft an impact player is not getting lucky, as you say, as the Rangers did or Tampa did with drafting Point in the 3rd round, but instead drafting up in the top 5. Trading a mid 1st round pick for Risto is, as I stated, no different than a team trading for Risto at the deadline hoping to go on a deep playoff run. Besides, Fletcher can trade Risto at the deadline and recoup some of what was traded away, so it will be a wash.

If Fletcher holds tight to the deadline, Risto will absolutely get us a 1st round pick and maybe even a 3rd as well. Teams at the deadline will need good defenseman and Risto will by far be the best defenseman available.

You're coming unglued again. So even after giving you a chance to think about it, you double down on your comment that trading a 1st for Ristolainen is no different than a team trading a 1st for a player at the deadline. After calling me dumb and thick? The you say that Fletcher can trade him and recoup SOME of what was traded away so it will be a wash. Perhaps you don't know what a wash would be. A team normally trades a first round pick at the deadline because they are in the playoffs and think they can make a run. They are willing to give up a first for that chance. Being a contending team, they can give up that first. A team like the Flyers is in no position to waste a first round pick. That does not exist for the Flyers this season. The opportunity of winning the Cup will not be there. So it's not possible for it to be the same thing. LOL
So it's only high first round picks that are important to a rebuilding team. Picks lower in the first round aren't important. Your comments are beyond ridiculous.

No, you see Joe, with MJL its never about hearing and valuing different perspectives, its only about being right and wrong, and MJL must always be right! - jd250
and people arent allowed to change their mind. Most GMs observe all season and tweak as necessary. Perhaps change their mind on whats needed.
MJL said numerous times we are a good team, and last year was bad because of covid and we got off track and couldnt get back on because practice time. Thought we were more like the team that went on the hot streak. I bet he changed his mind. prob wont admit it though. We are exactly like the team from last year, with a bit better goalie.

I might change direction based on what I see, that is what smart people do after all. Smart people do not stay the course when all the evidence is hitting them in the face that they are heading over a cliff! Yes lets look at the names I put there, Coots Farabee, Hayes are not going anywhere. Hayes has no market at his cap hit and Coots and Farabee where just resigned to long deals! Same with Laughton. You don't give up on Hart, he has already shown how good he can be. Provorov I would keep because I think he and Ellis could be a solid pairing to build around. I would like to keep Frost but would be willing to trade him if the deal is right. So it was a well-thought out list and unlike you I don't believe this team is 5 years away. I think a good draft and some smart moves this team can be right back much sooner than that.
Look at the Minnesota Wild, that is Fletcher's team! - jd250
The team that is eating how many years of Suter and Parise contracts?
You trying to be Triple down clown
Chuckles is not a good gm -- like Jane's Addiction sung "Ted, Just Admit It"

What happens when other GMs realize/already know he is not a "good defenseman?"

Not really my opinion, just a fact, widely accepted really. But thanks. I will show you my gratitude by criticising your advocacy for signing Risto last summer, using your own logic.
Assume we had held off on Risto but signed Ellis, let Jake walk, and kept Ghost to play where Risto plays now. This year then, we would have been a Risto-less team, with Ellis injured. We would have picked where? Lets say about 13 or likely even higher? And of course, we would have kept the 2021 pick which was #18.
What would the value of a #13 pick + #18 pick be together? Why, that puts you inside the top 5 range for this year, using many models, the Athletic's one below.
And there you would have had your top 5 pick. And that is the true cost of signing Risto. Not just what you gave up for him, but what that pick, and where you would have gotten this year without him , would have obtained for you together.

The Flyers pick traded to Buffalo was #14. Not #18
