I thought it also had to do with the lords of the estate in Merry Olde England giving their servants the day after Xmas off, since the servants had to serve on Xmas day. And the servants were given boxes of food leftover from the lords' Xmas feasts as well as the lords' rejected presents...

At least that's what my dad told me. He was British. But he's very anti-authority, so he might be stretching the truth about it.
