I get what you're saying but I'm not entirely sure what exactly would represent a proportionate/fair punishment vs an "excessive" one in this case... if you consider the girl's and her family's perspective, getting a 1600$ fine as the only consequence might feel like a weak slap on the wrist.

The OHL didn't do anything for the woman or her family.
They simply served up a PR punishment.

Edit: if anyone wants to say the Swedish justice failed, that's fine and it's probably correct. However, an amateur hockey league in another country shouldn't be acting as if it's their job to correct wrongs elsewhere

the details weren't made public but I think the habs did offer their support to the family, whether it be in terms of professional help and/or some sort of financial retribution (which could always be argued was a PR move as well...). I don't think the OHL was necessarily wrong in wanting to add further punishment but I agree they should've automatically offered their support as well, first and foremost.

yeah I don't really see this as necessarily wanting to correct the "wrongs" from the swedish government but rather as seeking a more suitable consequence for the player... I wouldn't be so comfortable to welcome him in the league with arms wide open if all he had to do was pay a somewhat insignificant fine.
