You're assuming that he was promised anything. Players sign an SPC. What is contained within that contract is the only thing a team is obligated to do. NHL players know that your spot in the lineup is never a guarantee and that you have to continue to earn your spot. If your play does not warrant staying in the lineup, they you might not play. It's that simple. - MJL
You are clueless about how these deals get done.

Can people stop complaining that the Flyers took Ricci over Jagr. Jagr was telling teams he wasn't coming over right away because he all he wanted to do was play with Mario. - KGBflyers10
One of worst decisions in the history of drafting and you let the team off the hook on something anecdotal like that? You have plainly drunk the kool-aid big-time. |

I don’t have to say they blew it…it’s obvious. Any one can say “no one could have seen this”. In the end it’s a mistake. A mistake that has helped lead to where they are today. You might be right, 3/4 ofte league may have whiffed on the pick as well…unfortunately that honour went to Hextall.
As far as the am QB analogy? When are we supposed to debate a pick ? The day after ? The year after? Or a few years down the road when the results are evident? - landros 2
No one is happy with the outcome (player, organization or fans) but there is nothing inherently wrong with the pick when looked at at the time of the decision. If you looked at him after Y1, it looked promising. It’s like criticizing the Bengals for picking Mike Reid in 72 because he retired after 2 years to pursue a career in music. It doesn’t advance anything and it is more of a commentary about organizational fortunes than decision-making. If you want to go back to stupid decisions with lasting impacts, let’s talk about signing Chris Pronger or trading Forsberg + a massive booty for a front-running, selfish player. |

The Flyers didn't sign Chris Pronger. They traded for him.

“Facts”-LOL. I am sure that an NHL franchise at that time was going to let an 18 year old dictate where he would play. In any event, with a talent like that, you draft him and sign him to a big contract. At the time, Philly was by far the better franchise. We had been to the finals several times and were well run. This is just revisionism. |

All of the decisions related to this player hurt the franchise. The trade was dumb. Signing him without reading the fine print of the CBA was also dumb. |

None of those injuries suggested what has happened to the kid since he was drafted. Currently, he is plainly a cautionary tale. At the time, he was considered a can’t miss talent. I hope gets back and regains his game.

It's a missed pick no doubt but I refuse to place language like they blew it on it. They made a good pick based on the information at the time. It didn't work out. It's simply bad luck in my opinion. I keep reading about injury information. There was no information about long term injury issues at the time. There was also despite the narratives, not a consensus among the scouts on who to take. - MJL
This is how I understood the decision at the time.

That's not true. The trade for Pronger was a big reason why they went to the Cup finals in 2010. The 35+ issue was never a factor with Pronger. |

The way I remember the draft the year we selected Patrick. EVERY person in the know said it was only a two person draft. Word was there was a considerable drop off after the first two. No one and I mean no one, brought up Makars name. If they say so now, they’re lying. - Laceemup88

Say what you will about Hurts. I understand the concerns. But when it comes to crunch time, dude's a baller. I mean dude can flat out ball. |

10 more games to tie the record ... 11 to break it, and then trade him for a 7th round pick. - jd250
With Fletcher track record it might be Yandle + 3rd for that 7th round pick. |

He really does seem to overachieve when the game is on the line.
Hopefully Ertz catches the winning touchdown and dances on the star, a la TO. |

you know i still want to see a game of something around 30 of 39 with some decent depth of targets. not even so much connecting on giant bombs but i want to see a game with some 3rd and 9 hard breaking timing throws to convert from the pocket. |

The Pronger trade accomplished nothing. No SC, no long term dominance and it gave the false impression that we were closer than we actually were. As for the 35+ issue, it was contemporaneously reported that Homer mistakenly thought that the salary cap would no apply to Pronger’s contract. As for my prior posts, try speaking a little less authoritatively about things you plainly don’t understand. Do you really think Yandle would sign with a team that would not guarantee that he would be able to break this record? Just not how a deal like this gets done. |

Vick was a great QB here. Hurts is nowhere near as good. Not even close.
