The question is: is he good enough relative to what was advertised and what is needed to anchor a contending run? Answer seems to be: No. - PT21
What was advertised is completely irrelevant. How do you know he can't be an anchor on a contending team? Has he played on a team even close to being a legit contender in his entire NHL career?

No. He said "someone to carry him to elevate his play"
- PT21
Is Bolding words that weren’t said a theme here? It’s literally on the last page...you even agreed with me on the last page, starting with ok fair enough. Just give it a break, you two dimwits are making something of nothing. He needs a better partner. |

Exactly. Anyone still wonder why Nashville was willing to trade a legitimate top pairing RH defenseman for Myers and Patrick? - MJL
Except like in all trades in pro sports, players must be medically cleared and be examined before finalizing a deal. |

They're happy with the second pair and don't want to break it up? - Dkos
But if you are not happy with the first and third pairings, is that really a good argument? Another piece to this is not seeing Zamula or York. And I am not speaking of the benching Yandle talk.
What about…
Provy-Sanheim
Zamula-Risto
Yandle-Braun
Risto has played with lots of young defenseman in Buffalo, and this opportunity on the second pair is better match ups. I know Sanheim struggled early in the season, but he has played the right side before and is skating more confidently now. Braun is really helpful in making the third pair not get caved in. If there was a timetable for Ellis return maybe this would not be an issue, but the news yesterday wasn’t promising.

Fly guys big surprise tonite dominant 4-1 win. Giroux waives NTC at deadline but only to a team near Philly. Rangers make the best offer as they need a 3c. Do you trade him to the Rags and if so do you root for him to get his Cup? Think it's possible only see G waiving NTC if it's a nearby geografical team with a shot at winning. Caps..Canes..Rangers..Pens - hfc355
Depends on the return and a hard no.

When can we expect the 5 year plan laid out?
Always questions with very little answers from Cliff.

The last thing I would do is play a rookie on the 2nd pair with Ristolainen.

I could live with seeing it for a few games to decide how it is going.

So who plays their off side on the first pair?
Zamula? Seems like CF doesn't think he's ready. I'd be hesitant to drop a young kind into this mess too.
Braun looks like he needs a break and Yandle looks done.
Any way you cut it this team's defense is ugly. |

B/c there is something called using the past to project the future. #1D on cup winning teams (which I understand is a higher breed than mere contending) are a rarified breed, who when they play with much lesser partners, usually elevate them. I already gave you the examples of Hedman and Letang. I also remembered Keith - how did he make Gus look when they played together? |

I should not have put quotes there. The actual quote was:
"needs someone to carry him to make him look better. Doesn't look like he will be the one to elevate his partner"
Its all about expectations and standards. No one said Provy is chopped liver. Let's move on. |

Flyers need to stop doing things that are detriments to young players developing. That would be one of them.

Sanheim on the right side.
Zamula looking better with the Phantoms. I think at some point you have to live with rookie defenseman mistakes. Is that now? Soon maybe.
Yes, the revamp D is running with spare tires, blowouts and old treads.

There's an exact science. You don't seem to understand that there are different levels of players even at the #1 defense classification. Not every #1 defenseman is a hall of fame level player. You also don't need a hall of fame #1 to win. It certainly helps.
The player who made Duncan Keith look the best is Nik Hjamarlsson. |

Correct 3 D guys currently on this roster have zero upside and will not be in the NHL next season. Give them a 10 game stretch. Then reevaluate.

You're right, you do have to live with some rookie mistakes. However you do that on the 3rd pair for a player like Zamula.

You knew what I meant. I agree about how Provy has been handled since coming in. I see the current circumstances as a better situation, not perfect, just not as bad.

We were talking about the #1 D on a contending team. That's the standard I was using anyway.
Nobody was talking about Keith's glory days. He played with Gustaffson and played at a very high level for a season. Gustaffson is barely a NHL player. That's the whole point. |
