Brayden Schenn scored his 200th goal last night. Not sure that trade should be so loved now.
- ClaudeFather

He only has 200 goals?

Meh - it was a good trade then and still is, unless you think Frost and Farabee will be busts

What is Frost at this point? He has some flashes and I’m hopeful but he hasn’t put a stamp on anything. Farabee is a good player, hopefully he can maintain and continue to get better. Brayden schenn was and is a damn good player, better than the bum we gave $50M

I agree…it’s still not really decided yet. Obviously with the Blues winning a cup, they are fine with it.

Sure, averages ~20-22 goals per season. At the time, it was a good trade, and I think it still is. My opinion.

All I was saying was it looked really good and now it has faltered a bit. We knew we gave up a good player but still waiting on these two guys, one might never get it together. If we keep him we also probably never sign Hayes. Just says more about the direction of the Flyers and the failure that past decade has been.

Lol, that was during the Saw movie guy ownership era. There was no coherent rebuild... it was just a freakin' mess. They weren't even that bad (like 30+ wins) the year the got Stamkos. And if not for Barry Melrose they probably wouldn't have been bad enough to get Hedman.

I see. Wasn't it this time they hired Yzerman?

That's one deal. It was also 3 years after winning the Cup. When you've won a Cup, it changes things. He also wasn't about a point a game player. He had 51 points in 62 games.

Christ. I forgot that trade. I just said Flyers never trade established player for future potential star. Nvm.

I agree with Scoob. Schenn was meh here. Good trade.

Will either have as good of a career as Schenn?

The jury is still out on that. A lot has happened since that trade, that's for sure, but in isolation it still is a good one, imo.

Had Patrick been healthy Hayes probably wouldn't have been signed.

His plan was moving towards what Fletcher has actually done….how else could his signing of JVR?
- landros 2

Thats the signing that is weird. It went against everything he did. Trading Schenn, Umberger for Hartnell, not rushing draft picks, choice of Hakstol, everything suggested a guy playing the long game. I just wonder if there was some pressure to change trajectory.

True, still not winning with Brayden but you never know. Flyers just suck at everything

Didnt need to sign Hayes regardless if Patrick was hurt. They had better options

Nah, Yzerman was still a few years off when Brad Richards got dumped. Incoming owners were too cheap to pay huge contracts for the Big Three, so they forced Feaster to trade one of them.

Yzerman didn't get hired until after Vinik took over the team.

For the right price, I would.
- MJL

If I'm trading him to the Penguins, that price would be very high.

It's more like he didn't want to part with Simmonds and whatever else he was offering. Which we don't know. Unless of course you think that Florida was willing to trade that pick for just Simmonds.
- MJL

No not at all, if Florida would trade the number 1 pick for Simmonds that would be the dumbest thing I ever heard, Simmonds was only part of the deal.

not enough given what was given up for him. Still I am willing to give him this year to prove himself.

Agreed, Hayes for that term and price was as bad as the JVR signing IMO.

It’s not weird if you listened to Hextall and how he viewed FA’s….he always said they would be part of the the future when he felt the time was right….obviously, right or wrong he decided it was the right time…. Did he push up the time line because of a failure to add enough guys through the draft? Did he think they ‘were ready to contend’?

I see.

Sometimes I feel that in sports it is better to be wildly turbulent, and have huge ups and downs, rather than stay the course and be solidly good.

Good leads to great less often than bad leads to great.

Schenn is an interesting case. For all the buildup of him from the World Juniors to Pierre calling him the best hockey player outside of the NHL at the time of the trade to Philly, Schenn was very inconsistent in combining his skill with a physical presence. When both of them were activated, he was very good, but I just didn't see a lot of it on a consistent basis in Philly.

Many of his own projects were barely cutting their teeth. The D in particular was very young. Nor were the stars lighting it up. A guy who is taking such a long view: what made him think its time? Can't be the results, surely.
