eventually the rebuild will come, hard and fast and with virtually nothing in the cupboard to start from.
at that point, im willing to let hextall take a shot and see what the build and develop plan is. - stayinthefnnet
Even with the reputation that he’s an incompetent gm thsy doesn’t listen to anyone and can’t manage people? I would think if all that’s true the pens wouldn’t want him as being part of the org.
One thing I will say is that I am sick of The endless drama with this team where people get thrown under the bus. Clarke did it with lindros and it was like seeing your parents get divorced. Always in the news and it just looks like a dysfunctional family. Now here we are again with attacks on former legends when that stuff could be left behind closed doors. I know that there are agendas but it makes the org look like a farce. |

It's ridiculously easy for the Bruins to get to the net and to get the puck to the net. |

I wonder what Clarke will say about his tenure when it’s over. I’d prefer if he didn’t say anything even if it ends up a disaster. |

This narrative of asking how long it might have taken is asinine. Nobody can see into the future. If you can't see that how this team has conducted itself both under Holmgren and after they fired Hextall doesn't work, then you have blinders on. If you can't see that what Clarke was trying to do was protect Fletcher's job then you have blinders on. You can't fail in a patient draft and develop approach if you're not allowed to continue because the team lost patience. - MJL
It can be that both the Hextall years and the Homer/Clarke years were equally bad. What I care about is real objective results. Which Hextall pick is a game changer? |

Yes, but they are a better and smarter franchise than the Flyers. So that does not really translate to this decision. If Cliff does not work out here, I seriously doubt that he gets another GM position. Particularly, a position with one of the best teams in the league. |

Nervous whenever he handles the puck - Dkos
Yeah. He’s not good at that. I think he needs to watch price closely and learn from the way he does it. |

That was one of my first reactions to this. I am just tired of the recriminations. I also think that the public criticism of the draft picks is just inexcusable. |

Hextall didn't make any game changer picks. Overall though, his drafting was solid. Patrick was just plain bad luck. Everyone thought he was going to be a big time #1 NHL center and he was a consensus top 2 pick.

i think a lot of the "incompetent gm" comes from you guys rather than NHL circles as a whole. for better or worse, they are clearly very insular and nepotistic. so, aside from any actual evaluation of him, i would guess that he probably still has a decent reputation around the league if only because hes simply been in/around the league.
that being said, i think the true evaluation of his tenure with you guys falls somewhere in the middle. i dont think people give enough realization to just how much junk he needed to sweep out to fix some salary problems. there wasnt exactly a treasure trove of young assets for him to work with coming in. he made some decent trades. his drafting wasnt exactly prophetic, but his track record holds up to at least league average in retrospect. the fatal flaw (how much of it was his doing vs. trying to juggle edicts from on high) was having one foot in the pool of now and one foot in the pool of future. it very rarely works, especially when you dont have superstar talent to gloss over a lot of cracks in the process.

So I respect Clarke as a great player. I think his heart overrides his head and he gives his opinion freely. What he doesn’t realize when he believes he’s trying to protect the org is that but airing this dirty laundry in public, he’s actually tarnishing the org in the way you mention. |

Hexy did do some good things for sure….he made some mistakes…hopefully for you guys he’s learned from his mistakes. To me it’s no different then a coach learning from chance to chance. |
