Agree it was foolish for him to go 9th, he has the best shot on the team and scored a bunch last year in the shootout. It's probably cause trotz didn't like he's d at sonepoint in the game
- Upstate_isles

Has to be. That quote just kills me. At 0-3 he 'fumbled his chances', while the team was 0-16 prior.

I’ll never agree with lessening a teams chances to win to send a message or make a point especially with where this team is in the standings. Not saying this is the case but if it is it’s moronic. It’s a shootout not a period.

Yep thankfully coupled with Varlamov holding the fort till then. I’d rather not revisit those odds though…

I’ll add it’s not like he threw Pelech out there before Wahlstrom. I guess the thought of throwing Parise out there is he earned the right to be in the shootout because he busts his butt every shift. I don’t align with that thought process but I don’t think it’s that outlandish throwing someone like Dobson out there before Wahlstrom either. He has been playing well.

Defense registered 13 blocks last night, that’s getting involved. Is Lee nursing an injury?

I was going to say during the game, Lee looks awfully slow lately.

I normally like Bucci and Weakes with their other shows but they were a wee but over the top last night. Seemed like everything was AMAZING.
Particularly funny was when the puck trickled between Varly's legs and stopped on the goalline with Varly turning to flop on to it:
"Amazing save! What flexibility "
Uh, no, that was almost a very bad goal that just stopped on the goalline.
Then a puck gets shot directly into Hart's glove....'AMAZING'

If it was "amazing" that he made a save on a puck shot right into his glove, what would it have been if the puck went THROUGH Hart's glove?

They seem like real nice guys but I'm not the biggest fan of their commentary either. The whole ESPN broadcast in general has been total dogpoop. After one of the breaks, the ESPN theme played over the game for like a full minute It's so low-end.

I don't love TNT either but the panel is at least funny and the broadcasts are 100% better.

Wahlstrom being 8th.. I don't really have an issue with this since he was 0/3 in the shootout until last night. The shootout is kinda retarded and it's an odd skill set. Just b/c you have a good shot doesn't mean you are good in SO. some of the best shootout guys were hardly snipers (Franz, Kozlov, Schremp, Oshie, etc).

It's usually guys with great hands rather than a great shot. It really is something every team should pay attention to when building a roster though.. as an add on thought when looking at players. If seeing Laine's shootout numbers put him over the edge on you making a trade for him..etc.

interesting to look at..
notables:
Crosby is 92nd on this list.. under 40%.
Brock is 158th .. 35% .. 20 chances
Malkin is 186th
Tarasenko is 209th .. under 32%
Ovechkin is 217th .. 31.53% on 111 chances..

The whole team was 0-16, so the 0-3 part seems less signifcant. Wahlstrom was better at 12 years old on penalty shots than half our team lol.
I think there was definitely more to it than having 'fumbled' his chances

Honestly, I think you are reading too much into this. Shoot outs are something of a crapshoot, and I think the coach is just going with his gut instinct as to who looks like he could score on that particular day. Barry doesn't seem like the kind of guy who allows his emotions to dictate his game decisions.

I don't think it was an 'emotional' decision at all, I'm just saying the logic of the explanation doesn't hold up when you say you held him out because he fumbled his opportunities, despite the entire team being 0-16.

OK, I also don't think Barry was trying to teach Wally a lesson, or penalize him for some transgression. I don't think Barry was trying to do anything other than go with his gut instinct as to who was most likely to score in the shoot out. Gut instinct somewhat overrides logical decision-making when it comes to shoot outs.
