I don't think Ritchie will be here by the end of February.
Ritchie isn't as bad as we have seen, could stick around and prove useful by playoffs but I do think there are some teams intrigued by him.
Its the NHL...There are GMs out there that drool over the fact a player is 230 pounds every night. - Santo_44
I'm not dying on a hill, let alone standing on a small bucket to defend Ritchie! At this point I have hope, and as my live as a Leaf has shown, hope doesn't get you very far. It just brings more hope.
If they find someone who wants to offer value for him and alleviate our $2.5m cap burden, I think you do it. I found that while I didn't love a lot of things Burke did, he was good at saying things. One of the things he said was that when you make a mistake, you don't make it worse by waiting and hoping it fixes itself - you admit you make the mistake and you deal with it. He said that after they traded Versteeg when he didn't work out as a 2nd line Centre. Ironically it should have worked out well for us, but Burke sucked at drafting. We basically gave up Stahlberg for him, and then traded him for a 1st (Percy) and a 3rd (Leivo). That 1st could have been Namestnikov, Danault, Jenner, Rakell, Mayfield, Gibson or Saad - all picked within the next 20 picks. What could have been!

I agree, I don't see a team taking him for free right now...but in a hockey deal or rental deal as a throw in I think there are plenty rebuilding teams that would take him. He scores 15-20 goals again next season and a "Burke" like GM is paying some nice value at the TDL. It is a good investment for a team to make...but a GM wants to make himself look good by taking him as a throw in instead of outright trading for him.

Questions for guys with smokers:
Do you use it enough to justify it? A couple of neighbours I talk to say they don't use theirs anymore.
Do you fully cook stuff in it, or just finish it off in the smoker? I've just started "doing my internet research", and it looks like you can make good ribs in six hours. Do you do things like steak and chicken in the smoker, or just throw them in at the very end?
You frankers got me so excited about BBQ season yesterday, I spent two hours this morning shovelling off the backyard deck and patio. - Atomic Wedgie
Do you use it enough to justify it? - In the summer, spring and fall definitely but in the winter probably not so overall I would say so. I actually don't use it as much as I want to and am going to start trying a bunch of new dishes on it this spring/summer and fall as there are just so many smoker recipes out there.
Do you fully cook stuff in it, or just finish it off in the smoker? - I only fully cook on mine including pizza which takes 10-15 min tops and is unreal. I've done chicken, steak, ribs, home made burgers and of course beef brisket. I haven't used my BBQ once since I got my smoker and may not every use it again.
I love my electric, pellet fed smoker so much we are on my father in law to let us buy him one so when we are at his place (we are there probably 70% of our summer) we can cook great stuff easily and enjoy spending more time out on the water or in the sun than cooped up cooking and heating up the kitchen. Setting some tasty meat on the smoker for 6 hrs and just checking in or basting it every hour or so is so easy.

Burkie sucked at everything.
Everyone (including me) fell in love with him because he was a hard-drinking, gruff, candid guy. A younger Don Cherry.
Unfortunately, he was a complete disaster in Toronto. He wasted five years of my Leafs life - actually more, when you consider it took a few years after they fired him to dig out from the hole he had created.

Thanks. I appreciate it.
It looks like I can get a propane one for about $300-$500, and they don't take up much space.
Work is dead at the moment, so I'm kind of obsessing about some upgrades to the backyard for summer.
I was about to buy a new BBQ, but I've just got a new lid and bottom for my old one (bought off my brother 8 years ago for $100 - and it's still on warranty), so I can probably push that off for another couple of years.

I don't have one, but I have asked this question of my friends who do.
One friend lives in Texas in a double-wide, and he loathes being inside his crappy trailer. So he lives on his deck and he lives to smoke everything. He just throws throws everything in there - chicken, turkey, pork, salmon, brisket . . . and sends us pictures.
Another friend lives out here - at the cusp of Oakville/Mississauga, but he has a wonderful backyard with a lot of space - you know decking, stonework, pool, cabana, hot tub and still green space for kids to play in. He has that BBQ Kitchen / Smoker setup. He doesn't use the smoker anywhere near as often (he loves to Sous Vide and finish on the BBQ), but he still likes to use it . . . probably monthly.
One other guy talks about how he loves it, but I think he's used it once in two years.
If you have a nice yard / nice deck area and you spend time outside and you want to throw a long-cook on and enjoy some drinks with friends while you do, a smoker seems to be a great investment.
I think I want one, but we have a 12x12 builders deck off the back of our house and haven't built up anything past that, despite having a lot of space to do so. With the BBQ and table (and the goddamned plants), there's not much room for me to add one, so I haven't. Realistically, I would likely use it around once / month if I had one.

I initially loved the Burke signing until he mentioned that he didn't believe in a full rebuild... at that point, I knew we were going to be (frank)ed.

I've been toying with the idea of getting a smoker. Couple of the things that have kept me from jumping in are the price of a quality smoker (I've read a bunch of reviews of bullet smokers etc. that say that the temp is hard to keep down). Also, and not sure if my paranoia is justified, but I'd like to keep it further into the backyard where I don't have electricity so the smoke isn't billowing into my neighbours' houses.

You, my friend, are incorrect about Brian Burke. Brian Burke did not suck at talking about Brian Burke, nor talking about how great Brian Burke was, nor talking about how kind Brian Burke was, nor talking about how tough Brian Burke was.
Brian Burke was great at talking. Especially about Brian Burke, which was his favourite subject.
Drafting, developing, scouting, managing, evaluating his own team . . he was very, VERY poor at these things. Surprisingly poor. Embarrassingly so, even.
Oh. He was also good at trades with Philadelphia - or specifically with Paul Holmgren.

I'm so sick of reporters asking players and coaches incredibly lazy questions.
You aren't going to get good answers. People laugh at players and coaches, but why the frank would they give honest answers, that may provide information to competitors?
What the frank was this reporter expecting him to say? I'd love to ask the reporter that question.
It's just franking lazy journalism. The journalist should be giving his opinion on what the Oilers need to do to get back to winning, not ask a player, when the entire franking world knows the player isn't going to give a meaningful answer.
The absolute worst is the end of the half, running to the locker room interview with the football coach whose team is losing at halftime.
"Hey coach, your team is down 24-0 at the half, what do you need to do better in the second half?"
"We just need to do everything better. Our offence needs to figure out a way to move the ball, Our defence needs to make some key stops for us, and our special teams need to come up with a big play to swing the momentum."

Don't disagree that both sets of questions seem stupid but the comparison isn't a fair one.
The security guard is asking the questions he has been told he must ask so the business (mall) owner can check the box saying the screened everyone and not get fined by the province. It's stupid and just a mockery but the moron reporter chooses to ask the stupid and insulting questions on his own and then follows it up with an insult wrapped up as a question. If I was the player I'd just have either ignored his "why are you pissy" question all together and smiled while looking at the rest of the room and asked if anyone else had a question or if I was feeling extra pissy just got up and walked away without a word.
Nice to see Edmonton has it's own version of Steve Simmonds though.
This still makes me laugh (I assume it was Simmonds Phil the Thrill was calling an idiot)

i really understand why some swear by smokers like the Weber Smokey Mountain, the Kamado Joe and all the electrics, For me it's a lot of hassle and expense for minimal gain. If you really want that smokey charcoal flavour get a big green egg. They are great, alot more work and mess and way less convenient than a high end BBQ.
