If those are the types of returns you can get for late first, you absolutely do it. For defenseman particularly, I just don't see either team dealing those players for a late 1st. We got Hagg, a 1st and a 2nd for Risto. Both of these guys are significantly better than him. Don't think that's too light? It's my initial impression, but I'll gladly be wrong lol.

Neither of those teams can return their injured players without being over the cap.

Hell give vegas both its picks back for Theodore if you have to.

A 1st round pick for a 32 year old by the start of next season Savard?

- kingcong39

fair criticism on the price...but what about the player in a top-four, rhd role for the next 3 seasons?

That's true, but doesn't mean Theo is the one to go or that they'll get fleeced because they're up against the cap. There's some potential for that, but they could let McNabb, Smith and Janmark go for equal savings and probably get a late 1st for McNabb as a UFA rental if they feel pressed to not let all walk and restock a decent pick.

Hot takes, 2022 NFL off-season QB edition:

Rodgers to San Fran
Wilson to Pittsburgh
Watson to Seattle
Jimmy G to Denver
Carr to Indianapolis
Mayfield to Las Vegas
Cousins to Cleveland
Wentz to Minnesota

See them giving up on Lance without even giving him a real season? They gave up 2 extra firsts and third to move up to get him. Seems.... unlikely.

habs fan on capfriendly:

"Savard can be had for much less.
While it isn't entirely fair to judge him on this season, he's Bergevin's desperation signing, so we aren't too attached to him (understatement)."

I wouldn't give up much of anything for Savard as I'm not a fan and believe he's overrated.

I'd look elsewhere.

Not sure, maybe waiting for another transaction to hit?

Makes no sense calling him up if he isn't going to play, he has been on fire in Rochester since making his NHL debut.

He's not doing this year what he did exceptionally well last year. Could be coaching, pairing, but he's been in decline for a few years and he's 32 next year. A renaissance is possible (like Kyle) if moved to a different team, but unlike Kyle, you're going to ask him to play the same role he's always played. Kyle evolved and adapted. David Savard can't do that. Regardless of anyone's optimistic views of the guy, he's having a bad year and he certainly shouldn't cost a 1st round pick, just like his pal Ben Chiarot.

The trend since the taxi squad was re-implemented was to 'call up' guys to the taxi squad and then on game days put them on your active roster. It's basically the NHL halfway house.

meh...i watched him in columbus and he was a solid defensive-defenseman and pk guy...he also contributed in a limited role to the bolts cup win last season...perhaps at 31 yrs of age those traits have diminished to the point where he's not worth the money (and definitely not a first rounder,) however, it's gonna be tough for the sabres to get to the cap-floor next season without a huge contract and at $3.5m it helps...plus, he's under contract for three more seasons which means that right side will at least be stabilized while the youngins make their way through developmental channels

he clears the front of the net and not afraid to throw a punch

you really only need guys that can bring it for 15-17 minutes a night as the other guys are getting big minutes
