I apparently am a dunce when it comes to cap management in hockey trades, so can someone please help me understand how this really works?
From the hockey news article I was reading this morning about the possibility of trading G:
Cap Friendly shows Giroux carrying an annual average value of $8.275 million. Interested contenders with limited cap space could prefer waiting until the trade deadline when most of his cap hit has already been paid out by the Flyers.
So if a team does trade for G, is the cap hit for them *only* the remaining salary that G is owed for the season, or is it the entire $8.275M which is his average annual cap hit? I quoted puckpedia yesterday where it seemed to say the team trading for a player assumes the entire cap hit of that player. I'm confused. |

Good for him. I don’t get some of the Jake hate. Was he a franchise forward? No, but at his peak he was legit top line playmaker, possession driver and quality pp guy. Also, outside of Clarke, Barber, Lindros, Recchi, Eklund, Forsberg and Giroux, he’s as good a pure playmaker as any Flyer ever. - BiggE
Glad he’s healthy and playing. Bought tickets for this game because of him and will proudly wear his jersey. |

Never underestimate the incestuousness of NHL and similar management. And the excuses that Covid + injury offers for this year.
Yeo inherited a ship without Hayes/impaired Hayes/no Couts/no Ellis/Roo out for a few games/Yandle with his streak burden/Risto out for a few/ etc etc.
If some of these guys come back, and they go say 0.65+ in the last 25 games, I say he stays. - PT21
For pure entertainment purposes I hope he stays. Just like I hope they go on a little point streak. Just like I hope CC resigns.

The cap is tallied daily. Take G's AAV, divide it by total # of days in the season, then multiply by the days remaining in the season. That's how much cap space a team would need to take him on.
(Look for "Remaining Daily Cap Hit" on G's CapFriendly profile) |

1. What they will actually pay out is his salary, which is only $5 m this season, and with a chunk paid out at the start by Flyers. That is relevant too for teams like Canes.
2. Cap hit for them will be the remainder of what is not retained by us. Which means at the least it will be $4.15m ish for Roo.
3. Cap space for them will be a factor that could grow, because of the ability to bank space.
Just ignore the proration for this purpose. It just serves to confuse. Both Cap space and Cap hit/AAV are quoted in seasonal terms so they use the same currency.
For the Giroux case, here is the bottom line: No team not called the Rangers has an ability to take him on without shipping out $Cap dollars of their own. Else, the cap space they have will simply not be anywhere near enough. All those proratinr arcane discussions are irrelevant for the situation you are interested in. |

Not sure If I did it right but I ran the trade proposal on Capfriendly and if the Flyers were to trade Giroux at the deadline (MAR 21st) his cap hit is 1.65 mill for the last 40 days of the season

That's right. Basically ~80% of the season is done by the TDL, so any team would only be on the hook for the last ~20% of G's cap hit this year.

If that were the case, why is Giroux's cap hit today exactly the same as it was before the start of the season, with over a third of the season gone.
Look at "Today's Cap Hit" on CapFriendly, 6th line down below the logo.
https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/flyers
Now look at the cap hit of all players, including Giroux, which is just the sum of their AAV.
The two are exactly the same.

Imagine if the Flyers retained half of that... for ~$800k a team gets to add Claude Giroux to their playoff run. The magic of prorated cap hits and banking cap space.

Thank you Tomahawk!
So for cap calc purposes the league uses 200 days because the league is including the 19 days in the Olympic break, which I hope the league is using for makeup games. So G's cap hit is $8.275M / 200 days = $41K per day. I think we are on day 101 of the season right now given the season started on Oct 12, so G has $4.1M of cap space remaining. The deadline is on March 21, so 59 more days away, so at that time G will only be owed about $1.7M; which should make him very easy to fit under a team's cap without the Flyers picking up salary or taking salary back!
Did I do this calc right? |

The numbers you want to look at are on Claude's profile. It costs ~$41k to have him on the roster everyday. On March 21, 2022, there will be 39 days left. Multiply.
(If you don't believe me, there are resources online that explain the way its calculated in greater detail) |
