he'd be one of the best trade deadline pickups in ages. I hope his playoff performances doesnt hurt our return. He hasnt produced in the playoffs. ....in quite a while - bradster
... if he waives.
I could totally see him wanting to stay, a la Mats Sundin, and the entire town losing their (frank)ing minds over it.

The numbers you want to look at are on Claude's profile. It costs ~$41k to have him on the roster everyday. On March 21, 2022, there will be 39 days left. Multiply.
(If you don't believe me, there are resources online that explain the way its calculated in greater detail) - Tomahawk
Oh I am more than happy to believe you, or any source that makes sense. I am just trying to understand...could you direct me to these resources?
Based on what you are saying, Giroux could be traded 50% of the way through the season, with no salary retained. When he was with the Flyers, on the 41st game, his daily cap hit would have been double that of the team he was traded to for his 42nd game. Even though both teams will have exactly the same length of services for the same player in the same season.
Does that make sense to you? |

It has nothing to do with games. Again, the cap is calculated by day.
He could get traded to the Islanders today and end up playing like 90 games, but he would still only get paid for working a total of 199 days. |

Fine, do it for the half way point of the season. 100 days for this year.
On the 100th and last day for the Flyers, his cap hit is twice what it would be for the 101th day for the Blueshirts?

It was Cliff Fletcher that asked Sundin to waive and he refused. I'd just die laughing if it happened to Chucky too.

Where are you getting that from?
His remaining cap hit on Day 100 = 41k x 99
His remaining cap hit on Day 101 = 41k x 98
(funny enough, today is day 100) |

No kidding. That is funny.
I do not think the Flyers will ask. They will see if CC comes to them.

Clearly for whatever reason this doesn't seem like it will happen. It is dumb on the surface. Makes zero sense.
Not being there everyday are there underlying issues why he isn't getting a more advanced look? - hello it's me 2050
Could be underlying issues but if that's the case send him back to the AHL, not on the 4th line.
Just my opinion, but part of the issue I have is keeping Yeo. He is going to coach to win because he wants this job (or to be a candidate for another club). He's not concerned with the future. This organization should be focusing on the future.
EDIT: I see you covered this already. |

Cap hits are done daily, right? So here are my daily calculations:
Cap hit, day 100: (8.25/200) =(yearly salary divided by # of days in season)
Cap hit day 101 (New team): [(8.25)*(100/200)] ÷ 200 (prorated salary divided by # of days in season)
Where am I going wrong? |

G's cap hit per day is $8.275 / 200 (# of days in the 2021-2022 season) which is about $41K per day. So if a team were to trade for G today on day 100 and the Flyers did not retain any salary, that team would assume the cap hit of 100 days (remaining in this season) x $41K per day or a total of $4.1M. |

Dude, I already gave you the exact calculations for days 100 and 101. It's the same whether G's on the Flyers, Rangers or whatever for Day 101. There's no additional math needed. It's simply daily cap hit * days remaining in season. Period.

I apparently am a dunce when it comes to cap management in hockey trades, so can someone please help me understand how this really works?
From the hockey news article I was reading this morning about the possibility of trading G:
So if a team does trade for G, is the cap hit for them *only* the remaining salary that G is owed for the season, or is it the entire $8.275M which is his average annual cap hit? I quoted puckpedia yesterday where it seemed to say the team trading for a player assumes the entire cap hit of that player. I'm confused. - jd250
It is only the prorated cap hit. Same thing as previous discussions. Cap hit/number pf days in season X remaining days of season.

For the Giroux case, here is the bottom line: No team not called the Rangers has an ability to take him on without shipping out $Cap dollars of their own. Else, the cap space they have will simply not be anywhere near enough. All those proratinr arcane discussions are irrelevant for the situation you are interested in. - PT21
I think it's very likely that the Flyers will be willing to retain salary in exchange for a better return. Which could involve more teams.

This all very simple. CapFriendly does all the work for you. Click on each team and they will tell you what each team's deadline cap space will be in terms of full season cap hit. Beware of LTIR and temporary cap space for injured players who will return. LTIR cap space is not bankable. You will see that teams that are in LTIR have the same cap space at the deadline that they have today. Teams that aren't in LTIR have their deadline cap space increase from what it is today. Click on each player for other details. Easy peasy. |

The player/cap hit side isn't difficult, yeah.
The team/cap space side... a bit harder to explain in layman's terms.
If PT asks, I'll leave it up to you |

Fine, fine.
I was thrown off by your implication (as I understood it) that the team trading for Giroux 80% (approximating the 159 days of 200 day season = 80%) of the way through season has some sort of cap advantage because of the timing of the trade.
To be cap compliant at season end, they would need to have that amount (20% of Roo salary) available as cap space. But that is the exact same amount that would have been charged to the Flyers cap from the Roo side if he had stayed for the last 20% of season. |

Could we get Dubios for Couts in a trade with the Jets. I'm guessing Dubois will come in $1M cheaper than Couts after he signs. Hes significantly younger. I'd say a healthy Couts is better right now. Jets window should be now. Could be a win win |

Indeed.
Your calculations earlier were quite correct and my understanding was not. Indeed, the cap space at TDL of 1 mil would be enough to absorb Giroux with 50% retained.
Having said that though, most contending teams do not have that much space available, and if they shipped out salary, the cap relief will also be prorated. In other words, a team that is against the cap would need to ship out a player with an AAV =50% of Giroux salary (not an AAV of 1 mil) to fit Roo in.
My apologies.

If he wants to stay, he’s earned it. If he’s willing to be dealt, the Flyers cannot miss on the right deal. I’m fine with either out come, as long as it works for both sides. |

no need to apologize, its confusing the way some sites explain the rules around trades and cap hits. I'm glad I got clarity now for myself. |
