CapFriendly does all the work for you. - MJL
What's funny is that team front offices actually use CapFriendly, lol. It's that accurate.

no need to apologize, its confusing the way some sites explain the rules around trades and cap hits. I'm glad I got clarity now for myself. - jd250
You are right about one thing and wrong about another.
You are right that the confusion stems from poor explanations. The underlying principles are quite simple* and they do make sense.
*Essentially, there are 2 basic things:
1. Your sum total of spending over the regular season on your roster cannot exceed salary cap.
2. When a player is on something like LTIR at any given time, the yearly cap calculations are done assuming that player will stay on LTIR (it will change if the player is activated from LTIR). And the exemption (the license to exceed salary cap) you get from the 'LTIRed' player exactly equals Salary Cap plus LTIR player AAV less your cap space.
You are wrong however about the need for apology. I had a poor understanding of the matter and yet I confidently sashayed to your comments and gave you sublimely incorrect answers.
It's unlike me. The HB bug is infecting me. But personally, it is good to have something cleared up. |

JVR needs a good 20 game run to be tradable. You could trade him to a team like the Yotes and then they move him, give a late pick, with each team holding half. Real money he is only owed 5 mil, that is good but 3.5 on the cap for a contender for the extra year will be tough. I think it will need to be a team in the playoffs who thinks JVR can help. Why would a non-playoff team trade for him wo a sweetener.
Frost, if you can't see the kid just needs to play and play with the right players, I dont what to tell you.
CF- Man, like all fans you want your team to win and I was hoping for success coming into this season, not a cup but a step forward where the whole franchise (JR, AHL and big club) took a step forward. Every move he made missed and missed badly, then just shxt luck with Hayes, Coots etc. I end up saying if he gets canned so be it. Leaders make decisions and they are responsible for those decisions. The finally straw is the way they use their players, YEO seems to employ the same strategy as AV, as the prior coach.
Here we are 2 GM's later, drafting for what seems forever and we have ZERO 4th line and ZERO 3rd pair D. Yes I want top end talent but the fact they could not draft and develop the low end? Seriously...
I do think they will have some prospects step forward next season, I think they will have a 4th line. I still don't see the D and they don't have the speed.
G, I am sure he came into the season thinking they would be a playoff team and the contract would take care of itself, man he was wrong. I Would get the best trade with every playoff team and present them all to G.
CF stays, he will tinker again
He goes, who knows what they will do, my sense is you are going to see them try and attempt to make hockey trades, like TK for ??? Clean out the old from TK forward
Speed and skill after all the moves CF made were still my concerns, it is still ... |

Indeed.
Your calculations earlier were quite correct and my understanding was not. Indeed, the cap space at TDL of 1 mil would be enough to absorb Giroux with 50% retained.
Having said that though, most contending teams do not have that much space available, and if they shipped out salary, the cap relief will also be prorated. In other words, a team that is against the cap would need to ship out a player with an AAV =50% of Giroux salary (not an AAV of 1 mil) to fit Roo in.
My apologies.

Not salary, AAV. Giroux's salary this season is 5M. His AAV is 8.25M

The only site necessary to use is CapFriendly. They have a CBA FAQ as well as other explanations that tell you everything you need to know.

This needs to be clarified. It is not exactly correct. Many teams will remain cap compliant by using LTIR to exceed the upper limit. For example, 16 teams last year exceeded the upper limit of 81.5M and were cap compliant at the end of the season. TB leading with 98.8M.

AAV and salary are two different things in the salary cap world. It is always by AAV and never calculated using salary.

I am aware. Why would I suddenly start using salary in a discussion where I was consistently using AAV hitherto?
It was a typo/loose-speak.

Both of your posts contained errors that needed to be corrected due to it being disinformation. It is important to understand what cap compliant means. Teams can absolutely exceed the salary cap and remain cap compliant. By definition, a team using LTIR is exceeding the salary cap. There were other inaccuracies but I let them go. - MJL
Which is what I said in #2. Not just that, I pointed out exactly how much a team can go over cap because of an individual player's LTIR issues.
You read hastily, missed the point, responded, mentioned that part of my post was about Giroux, deleted that part out, go confused and are now doing your usual dance invite, for which I have regrettably exhausted my appetite and must demur. |

Your two points contradicted each other. Your 2nd point was about calculating LTIR cap space. This statement is also incorrect.
"When a player is on something like LTIR at any given time, the yearly cap calculations are done assuming that player will stay on LTIR"
Multiple posts you've made on this page and others needed correction due to inaccurate information. There are many who are asking questions and they should get the correct information from a source that is actually knowledgeable about the cap. |
