Can someone explain what a Player Development coach does? It was my understanding that their role was to coach players on how to live off the ice with working out, nutrition, finances, how to deal with the media etc. - MBFlyerfan
Developing players , they all go back to junior or college anyways, what are they getting developed in rookie camp? It takes effort from the player in the off season and during the season to do the right things. This team is just horrible at drafting and fielding a good hockey team. I don’t think this development thing is as big an issue. Maybe that’s part of it since guys are slotted way too high but. |

If he’s getting interviews with the Canadiens and supposedly interviewed well I’d think he’s competent. - ClaudeFather
Interviews are one thing. Experience is another. I'd prefer a young guy who has been working with an NHL team and is up and coming and has not interned under the Flyers umbrella.

The team is horrible, trade away the pending free agents and you can be horrible next year too. Maybe grab some veteran plugs where necessary. If that goes on for another season, then you have 3 very high picks in a row. Is that considered tanking? What would be the alternative sign guys like Kevin Hayes to bad contracts and finish top 10 instead of top 5? I don’t understand people’s idea that tanking is something they or the organization is above. - ClaudeFather
Tanking is intentionally trying to lose and fielding a non-competitive team in order to secure a higher draft pick. Tanking is not trading away players who aren't in your future for assets.

I completely agree that the team is horrible and beyond repair at this point. As much as it would bother me to see G in another team's jersey, they owe it to him to give him a legit shot at winning a cup by trading him. I'm sorry, but I don't trust Fletcher to fix the team, no matter what that means! Although tanking may be the only option at this point, I'm simply stating it doesn't guarantee #1 overall picks and certainly doesn't guarantee the team will improve. There's a lot more Nail Yakupovs and Nico Hischeirs than there are Connor McDavids!

Not a bad idea, just thinking he’s a skilled undersized guy. He wouldn’t be glued to the 200 foot player like the rest of these shmucks. I also have no idea who are the up and coming GMs. Figured Danny might be viewed as that if he got that interview and from listening to Billy G on chiclets those interviews go into specific detail on laying out their plan so experience might not be there but whatever he was preaching seemed to make an impact with them. |

Several definitions of tanking in 2022.
would trading say TK Ivan and Laughton for future draft picks be tanking?

Well I’m all for fielding a non competitive team the next couple years, it’s the best way out of this. |

The key to putting a decent team on the ice is drafting well, not necessarily tanking. Tanking may accelerate the process, but for every Patrick Kane that goes #1, there's a JVR that is right behind him! That's a massive talent decrease from #1 to #2 (Kane's a future hall of famer and JVR will be an after thought)and being the worst team in the league doesn't guarantee a #1 overall pick. How many #1 overall picks does Edmonton have and they have won exactly what since 1990? The Flyers have had some luck come their way by getting higher picks through the lottery, but they didn't draft well for a variety of reasons(Hexy vs. scouts, bad luck). Still sucks that the Flyers have only ever picked first overall once in the team's history and that was a trade they made to acquire the pick! - aantny88
There is no guarantee that a team is winning a cup by tanking. Even if a team is lucky to get an exceptional player they have to fill out the rest of the roster, something Buffalo and Edmonton have failed miserably at. But to win a cup a team needs exceptional players. Are the odds better at top the draft for such players or later in the draft? There is also the added benefit of the players at the top tend to be NHL ready faster. With Hart here, the Flyers can’t be drafting players in the middle of the first that won’t be available to make an impact for another 4 years.

I have no idea how Fletcher is still in that seat. I said it yesterday if they are selling this deadline how in the world can this guy get the green light to completely rehaul the roster in the offseason and then in 6 months get to be a seller. |

They don't owe him, or any other player, anything. If/when an move is made it should be the move that best helps the team. Sentimentality has no place there.

Yes, getting rid of Jeff Carter and Bob was very smart of him. We are quite fortunate. - iamscore2day
Dude I would make the Carter trade everyday of the week. Couturier and Voracek in the same trade. Total 100% win for the Flyers.
Bob was not a good one. He made a ton of really great trades to build that 2010 team.
He was not good with contracts or drafting though. |

Once we get to our second 10 game losing streak you’d hope the conversations about firing him would start. Is that 3 10 gamers on his watch? |

How many of the 16 attempts did they skate in 3 miles per hour.....or for some asinine reason skate to the far right or left and create a worse angle for themselves approaching the goal.
Easy solution...mandate...skate down the middle as fast as you can....no BS. I guarantee they'd be in the top half of shootout teams.
This is Pee Wee level coaching.

rebuilding, tanking, whatever you want to call it. why are we arguing about the wording. I would say trading those guys are tanking, but someone else may not.

Old boys club or not, I don’t doubt that someone like Briere would bring a new perspective that is sorely needed. If he can be successful, it doesn’t matter that he’s being promoted internally. |

Agreed. I feel as though the best approach is to come in with speed sot that you can either make a quick lateral move to open space or cause the goalie to misread the pace he has to back up. Coming in slow means the tender can just out wait you. Add that to the fact our players have limited skill to begin with and it’s no bueno. |
