Like I said, the most likely scenario is he extends in Calgary. But if they don't do anything in the playoffs again, they have to question whether it's worth keeping the team together. With no new arena on the horizon, the ownership group might want to cut back on the payroll for a while, especially considering the Flames weren't really profitable before the pandemic.
It's also the perfect time for a rock bottom rebuild. If they don't bring back Gaudreau and trade away Tkachuk, Lindholm, and Markstrom, they'll easily be the favourite for Bedard and have a billion dollars in cap space.
Obviously, that's not going to happen though and the Flames will be chasing mediocrity forever.
