The salary cap is an issue with teams not having cap space but Couturier's contract for a player of his ability is not an issue. 7.75M a year for a 1st line Selke level 30 goal, 70 point center is a bargain.

You can't get rid of everyone. You need some vet quality players for some stability and to help young players acclimate. Couturier is a player you should keep unless blown away in a deal.

- MJL

Like I said, I still think there would be a market for him even with the extension, I just don't think the return would be close to the OP's starting point. That was really my point.

I like Couts. But completely understood why some were pushing to trade him prior to extending/committing to him. At the end of the day, I'm okay with the Flyers deciding to re-sign him, and agree that his cap hit is fair. At least for the first couple of years. But we all see that this team will not be contending for the next few years. So will they end up just wasting the years of Couts being a bargain or at least a fair deal? Will his contract be a burden by year 4 or 5 when hopefully the team is showing signs of life again? I hope that's not the case

will be 30 December of 2022. First year of his extension.
- hello it's me 2050

So what?

Another "ex-selke" with a long injury history is still going strong at age 36, which is the age Couturier will be at the start of the final season of his contract.

Mayhew and Brown are inconsequential, waive them, put them on the Phantoms, whatever. However I think MacEwen deserves to stay on this team.
- jd250

I don’t have one single issue with MacEwen. I don’t understand what this fanbase is expecting of their fourth liners. How about this. Let’s get out top nine to score and properly defend as a unit and worry about what an 8 minute a night can do later.

No he will be 37 turning 38 in last year...plus he is a different type player with more injuries and knee problem history..That contract will look good for 3 maybe 4 yrs hopefully....after that all bets are off......as a Flyer fan would you trade for him if he was a Devil at this point and give up assets???

Who are we to be picky? Ivan Provorov isn’t good enough for us? I’m all for keeping him because who exactly are we gonna bring in, who will be better? All 6 defensive slots are kind of an issue right now.

Just watched the replay of that Laine goal, TK flying the zone when just standing next to him sims up this team’s competence level

that's great. Glad you think this ex selke will be productive at 36 as do not see that happening at all

Though you are blind and cant even see it has nothing to do with his production. This team stinks and will for several more years. There is no need to keep him as he will hinder this team moving forward. See Captain Comfortable.

Tell me why you think this team should keep him being in the state they are today.

It is 2022, you can have a skilled 4th line. Does he add any skill to that 4th line? Maybe if a better 4th line they would play more than 8 minutes. The flyers are an archaic origination when it comes to building a team.

The final year of his contract is 29-30. In October 2029 when the regular season begins, he will be 36. When the contract ends in June, 2030, he will be 37.

If MacEwen was only playing 8mins a night, there wouldn't be a problem.

But last night he played almost 13mins, 3mins on the PP, and Yeo put his line out down a goal with 3:00 to go. And it wasn't like he was effective at all.

I’m watching Patrick Laine play last night and I remember reading on this board that “Laine isn’t a player you win with”, which is why it’s good we didn’t make an offer for him to the Jets. We’re team that went winless ten times, twice this season. With Travis Konency going 20 games in a row without scoring. If you can’t win with Patrick Laine, who on this roster can we win with?

More than 3 points in 38 games.

In 19-20 Pitlick had 20 points in 68 games, Raffl had 20 points in 58 games, and NAK had 15 points in 36 games.

I don’t know what to tell you. Max Willman and Mayew or whatever are currently regulars. The difference is, MacEwan is an NHL player.

Again, Konency went 20 games without a goal and we’re worried about a fourth liner’s offense? Not to mention the fact we have multiple players on the roster who have no business in the nhl.

It is very funny to me that Couturier winning the Selke in 19-20 bothered you so much that you constantly refer to him in this weird way.

I think it’s weird anyone would be bothered by calling Coots an ex-Selke winner…because he is. Ex, former, whatever. He’s not currently the raining Selke winner and that’s ok. Who cares?

Yeah, like MacEwen.

Goalless droughts aren't a big deal if the player is still producing points by setting up goals for other players.

Anyway guys, I gotta go back to work but in case you guys haven’t noticed…the entire line up can’t score from top to bottom. Zach (frank)in MacEwen if the lead of our worries

Oh my god, CC stands for Captain Comfortable? You really are a sad little man.

As for the rest of your post, no, keeping a 1C on a below market deal is not hindering any team. Least of all a Flyers club with very little center depth.

Because the Flyers have me in a depressed state, I was wondering how things have gotten so bad in a 2 season span? I know they exceeded expectations when they went to the 2nd round and lost to the Islanders in the "bubble", but I'm not sure many of us expected this! I took a deep dive into the Flyers roster and looked at several things; who drafted/acquired the players, what round they were drafted, where they play in the lineup (Top 6/Bottom6, 1st/2nd Pair/3rd Pair) and whether they are exceeding, meeting or below expectations (which is obviously subjective).

Fletcher is responsible (draft/trade/FA signing) for 16/28 (57%) of the current players on the roster. 1 is exceeding expectations (York), 7 are meeting expectations and 8 are below, for essentially a 50/50 split. 2 are top 6 forwards, 6 bottom six forwards and 2 1st/2nd pair defensemen, 5 3rd pair defensemen and 1 goalie.

Hextall is responsible (draft/trade/FA signing) for 9/28 (32%) of the current players on the roster. 4 players are meeting expectations and 5 are below expectations for a 50/50 split yet again. 3 Top 6 forwards, 3 Bottom 6 forwards, 2 1st/2nd Pair Defensemen and 1 goalie.

Homer and Clarke have a total of 3 players (Giroux, Couturier and Laughton) remaining on the team of the 28 total (10%). 2 of which are meeting expectations and 1 who is not. 2 are top 6 forwards and the other is a bottom 6.

Based on this information the majority of the poop show that has become the Flyers can be equally blamed on both Fletcher and Hextall. They both made poor FA signings/trades and had inadequate drafts. There are 14 first round picks on the team at the moment and only one of them is exceeding expectations (York). I can't definitively say, like some on this forum, that it's more one GM than the other who should bear the brunt of the blame. IMHO, they both have performed below expectations and until they start drafting/developing better, we'll be in for an almost unwatchable product on the ice!
