In all fairness, who was available to be developed on the farm? Benning had many picks that were/are college kids or Europeans, who want to be close to mommy, so they stay over in Europe and expect to be placed into lineup.
Also, the drafting guru Benning wasted a bunch of picks and I don't mean in trades.
A player like Rodrigo Abols could have been signed as a free-agent shortly after the draft, but Benning couldn't wait the 5 minutes and drafted him late in the draft.
Benning drafted Carl Neill and Tate Olson in the same draft and neither were even signed.
Benning was just an absolute terrible hockey guy.

You should look at the new bosses selections over the last 8 years. It wont take long seeing they averaged about three picks a year but aside from Kappanen I don't think I recognized one player

I won't put you on the "Rutherford will fix it" list then .

We lost a lot of players a lot of different ways for nothing. Like not a single pick or prospects of any level in return. That is the biggest thing that I feel left the gaping hole.

Signing ufa’s the extra year was a big problem. The retool was at the route of everything delaying what everyone knew had to be done. Resulted in stop gap ufa’s on questionable term.

Ironically the guy who was brought in to deepen the prospect pool and add depth to the organization ended up leaving it is shallow as the last guy lol. Especially on defense, Hughes was the only dman they drafted and developed into an NHL'er in 7 and a half seasons lol. Hopefully that won't be the case again this time around.

Of course, but just comparing these guys to the previous regime is a very low bar that they'll easily clear. We should aim higher than that. I want a management team that can build a contending roster.

It all depends on what the owner wants to do with his club. I just seen Nuckers comment about no Dmen drafted that played in the NHL aside from Hughes. Forsling and Tryamkin actually played in the NHL and so did OJ.

Rutherford has not drafted a Dman in the last 8 years that is playing in the NHL . I might be wrong on that but no names look familiar.

There a reasons why some of these guys are late round picks. Also, someone might look good in the NCAA, but that is a pretty low level development league, imo.

Remember our future 2nd line centre, who was going to bump Bo to 3rd line, Adam something.

You are omitting they were ineligible for offer sheets. Only Hughes & Boeser signed earlier & neither at huge cost. Cap crunch not hell was from many contributing factors. Lui recapture is forgotten. LTIR for ufa’s is double edged. Too much cap over the years spent on the bottom 6.
