I like your optimism… I was thinking the next 10 years or so.

Canucks have some interesting players, that might look good in New Jersey uniforms.
Could be interesting trade partners.

Yessir, Garland or Boeser would be a welcomed addition if Fitz can get something done. Don't think Miller is someone he'd go after though.

So Dom L and Sean Gentille of the athletic gave out their midseason grades and theyre pretty spot on. They have the Devils ranked 23rd, and their grades are:
-Blackwood and the rest of the goalies: F
-Rest of the team: B-

Pretty accurate tbh, everybody seems to know we're getting sunk by goaltending.

Can we trade a goalie for Bo Hovart?

Man, I hated that Schneider trade when I was at the Rock and Bettman announced it and I hate it more now! Mostly because I couldn't think Marty was done and knew it would be a problem. Frankly, I think it's why he ended up in St. Louis.... I get that it was fine on paper. I get that Cory gave us great goaltending for a couple years. But still, talk about a turning point in the franchise.

Schneider was a top 3 goalie in the league for about 5 years, so giving up a first for that performance is fine... if you're a team that is in playoff contention. We were a Vet team that lost our two best players (Parise/Kovalchuk) that had no prospects or any kind of talent whatsoever. Lou needed to start the rebuild right then and there but it's his goal every year to compete so we were a bad team but had a great goalie that prevented us from getting good draft picks. Horrible years.

That about sums it up, depressingly so.
There is an old baseball axiom - Trade a player a year too early rather than a year too late. Hopefully Fitz takes this to heart. Severson having a career year, see if you can get anything of value. 2012 (Parise/Kovalchuk) was unbelievably great, but also blinded Lou. Also take advantage of cap room....

Yup. Totally agree. That's why I said I was fine with it on paper.

Just less in reality.

Not that we would've won the lottery but the two drafts with the the most impact players available we had middling picks and took bad players with them lol. I just wish we could've done better for Cory who had his best years all wasted on us. And probably getting overworked contributed to his career ending injury as well.

For everyone that wants to trade Severson. How would you replace him?

The devils have don't have a right handed dman that could step in and play in the NHL. They also do not have a dman (other than Doug) who can move the puck the way Severson can. Top 4 right handed Dmen do not grow on trees and are hard to come by.

All true. But perhaps someone in the AHL (Walsh?) or a stopgap player at a lesser cost would be worthwhile. Honestly, if we can get an asset for him (he will not be here when this team is contending) do so. We can continue to lose this year without him (i.e., he is not a difference maker on this team).

I don't think anybody is saying to just get rid of him to just do it, unless they truly don't understand how good he is. But he has expressed his true feelings towards the losing in past years and has been vocal about it, so you need to know if he's going to re-sign here or not. If Fitz is told he doesn't want to stay, then you need to move him for top tier assets by next deadline. Losing him will create a big hole in our defense though, no question about it.

He's a legit top pairing D by pretty much every single analytic metric, and he's having a career year counting totals-wise, so if he's being moved you better get atleast a young/team controlled legit top 6 winger and a high upside prospect.

I'd prefer to keep him, and get him signed long term, but in the end it comes down to him.(I'd like to keep both but i prefer to keep him long term over Graves, for instance).

There are some pretty vocal Devils fans that have hated on Severson for years for some reason. I don't really get it.

Having Hamilton and Severson locked up long term on the right side would be great for this team, but you never know if Severson wants to test free agency. We can't afford to have two guys on mega deals and some team might just pay him that. Might be less risk to trade him and recoup assets rather than chance it during free agency bid war.

Severson is tough. You don't wana lose him for nothing, I get that. But that's a big hole on D if we lose him via free agency or trade him.
