Everybody and their grandmother are constantly making jokes at the expense of the most powerful businessmen (Zuckerdrone, Dr. High and Jeff Baldzos) and politicians (Trump/Biden/Trudeau/Name your punching bag du jour). Critiquing things as "punching down" is basically a simple out to hide away from scrutiny.

Disagree.

Punching up does not mean only going after the zucks or trumps or whatever.

Punching down is making fun of someone because they are gay, punching up is making fun of someone who may be gay, but is doing something outrageous that has nothing to do with them being gay.

Feel free to replace gay with a minority, or disabled or woman... etc...

See the problem I have with this definition is that a gay, trans, woman of colour can basically never not be "punching down." Even if the actual context or subject of their joke is.

I can't stand comedy where the joke is literally "they're gay!" or whatever. Or that's the critique. I love humour that is willing to expose the humorous elements of any class of society.

But it's the internet and we're all good friends and we can agree to disagree mon ami.

It's all fair game or none of it is...
